Interestingly enough, one of the most qualified and interesting candidates is an NBA/Colangelo guy- Ned Cohen.

On one hand, he's right out of that tree you mention and on the other, he's young, smart, and supposedly progressive.

Zarren told them no once. Bringing back Gupta would be a clear signal they are taking back full control of their team and the future.

We get Fultz, without the trade, hence we'd have the pick, regardless. So, in my opinion, he got fleeced. YMMV

I'm of the opinion that you can't be too results oriented with trades like this. You simply can't wait and see what the Celtics might get. The future 1st round pick is an asset and I think you have to view it that way. What if that pick could have been packaged in a trade for Kawhi (say Covington, the Kings pick, and some lower asset for Kawhi)?

Would you rather have:

Fultz and Covington or Fultz/Ball/Tatum and Kawhi?

That could be a realistic outcome and, in my opinion, I wouldn't care too much what the Kings pick turns out to be (even if it turns into a great player). The fact that Ainge got that strong of an asset and still got the player he had rated the highest on his board is the reason that Colangelo got fleeced.

I don't think many would argue with Fultz being the pick. The fact that Fultz has so far lived up to the very bottom of his range doesn't mean it was a bad pick. I think the trade is what some people had a problem with.

I think it more a question of we don't know yet how badly we were fleeced. Perhaps fleeced isn't the right word and the problem lies more in misevaluating the draft class. Boston seems to have gotten a better player with the 1.3 than Colangelo got with the 1.1. In that sense, anything that the two draft picks end up providing to Boston are just salt in the wound. Their guy played a key playoff role, while ours was basically the equivalent of a healthy scratch. Moreover, Fultz looked like a lost puppy all season and seemed not mentally strong. Taking the whole trade/draft/tracking player off-season/player development/player use situation, the draft was not a raging success for Colangelo. Yes, Fultz had an injured shoulder first half of season, but he wasn't good or confident when healthy, and there was all that strangeness about deciding on his own to change his shot during the off-season. He just seems different than the first year lost seasons of Embiid and Simmons. Perhaps next season he'll be fine. That would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. Bottom line: I think Colangelo gets Fultz just by sitting at 1.3 and likely we would be better off if he hadn't gotten Fultz.

This story hasn't been written yet. The glimpses we got of Fultz were impressive and for someone who wasn't a 100%.

We might have a better idea by this time next year or if Fultz if the centerpiece of a Leonard trade.

I'm prepared to concede that it was a terrible trade and it still wouldn't be a firing offense. Pat Gillick made some really bad trades too. Now, there's reason to think Colangelo was never a great GM in Toronto and shouldn't have had this job, but that's still a separate issue.

As much as I didn't like Colangelo, he didn't do a bad job in Philly. His main job was to not mess up the future of the team. While I think the Fultz trade failed to accomplish that, the signing of Covington was a very good move and what looks like a good contract. Signing Redick accomplished winning in the near-term while keeping cap flexibility going forward. The in-season signings provided great value on the court.

If teams and players can trust him, then I think he'll have a job in the league if he wants it. Teams like the Kings and Grizzlies should be happy to have him.

That being said, he was gifted a talented team with a lot of assets and proceeded to light one of the assets on fire, so I am not sad to see him go.

...after Fultz struggled in his workout with the Sixers last June, league sources say some Sixers front-office members suggested that despite making the trade, the team should have taken a second look at Tatum or Lonzo Ball. But the idea was shot down by Colangelo, according to sources. Fultz was the choice. There was no turning back.

But also:

Let’s start with one massively overlooked aspect of this deal: at the time of the trade, it was not at all clear that the third pick would become Jayson Tatum. Many assumed that Josh Jackson or Jonathan Isaac was more likely to be selected than Tatum.

Point being, the Sixers didn’t punt on a consensus top-three pick in Tatum. He was a definite surprise to most at three, and there’s no guarantee the Sixers would have even taken him had they kept their pick. Tatum’s performance this season was a shock to nearly every draft evaluator.
