ESPN Top 50, Painter 11, Miller 29

On Painter: Painter is a potential ace who looked to be big-league ready in March of 2023 but was shut down during that spring training and won't throw a competitive pitch until 2025 due to a PRP followed by Tommy John surgery.

On Miller: Miller was a popular pick to click from the 2023 draft's muddled group of late-first round prep position players. He was old for his class and missed most of the spring with a broken hamate bone, but also had the longest track record in the class. He's now looking passable defensively at shortstop (when many, including myself, thought he had no chance of sticking at the position at draft time) and is going off at Low-A, completely eliminating the injury and age concerns from 12 months ago.

After watching Bohm and Stott emerge this year, and Miller tearing up Low A, have a lot more confidence in our scouts/development.
Abel is a bit of a disappointment, but not yet flop city.
They also seem to have Australia/New Zealand locked up, Mead (traded for Sanchez, any complaints?) and now Pouka.

Now if Caba and a few other LA players emerge, we can finally relax and know they've fixed their biggest problem.

I'm perfectly willing to give Abel a season or two in AAA to figure things out. He is really young for that level.

Neither Bohm not Stott were scouted or developed by this regime. Not that it doesn't reflect on the overall organizational leaps and bounds.

They were definitely developed, both have made significant progress over the past two years, not just results, but approach and swing mechanics.

Well, sure, they were coached and improved by the major league staff and it is extremely promising that the major league hitting and pitching coaches are finally on the same page with the dev staff. But those specific player were drafted by Almaraz and Klentak and had already left the minors before Mattingly got hired.

So really, you can give that regime credit (just like they made the somewhat easier calls to sign Harper, JT and Wheeler) while also wondering if Moniak and Haseley and all the younger pitchers (besides Ranger) might have met a better fate with a better manager and hitting/pitching coaches.

My issue with Abel is that he's never put up good full-season numbers at any level of the system. He strikes me as a future fifth starter, if anything. There is value in that, having to pay someone like him ML minimum or modest salaries for 4-6 years instead of paying Taijuan Walker $18 million/year for a 4.50-5.00 ERA. But still, Abel doesn't look like anything more than a fungible commodity.

If he's a true fifth starter vs. a 5/6 that is more than fungible, especially if his ceiling rises (as it has for Suarez and Sanchez). Also, he's been young for every level, and always by a lot (three to five years). They've tended to push him, and he's still barely pitched in AAA. I guess it's both good and bad news that his trade value probably isn't high this year either. But he could still be a real rotation piece in 2028 and he'd still be younger than Sanchez was last year.

Abel could also be a very good shut-down reliever if he figures out how to locate his FB a little better and not waste so many pitches by missing way out of the zone. He has the potential for decent value beyond the fungible level...if you watch him pitch, it's clear he's just a thrower right now; he has to learn to be a pitcher. And do it without blowing out his elbow or his shoulder.

Abel still is young for his level and relatively inexperienced. Remember he is from the Pacific Northwest where the baseball seasons are short then he basically lost 2020 because of the pandemic.

Now it is clear he has not really progressed much this year and that is a concern, but overall he is still on a good development track. He was always going to be raw and take some times. We got a little spoiled watching Painter blow thru the minors quickly.

The real timeline is that he needs to go on the 40 after this year, so he essentially has 2 more years after this where you could let him purely develop and then one where you really have to make some tough choices. But to the age he is 5 months older than George Klassen and 1 month older than Samuel Aldegheri, and nearly 2.5 years younger than rotation mate Michael Mercado.

Problem is he hasn't shown the kind of progress you'd like to see from a young pitcher after a few years.

Now I don't know what they're working on, it's possible they've made some tweaks and he hasn't made those changes second nature yet - which is why I look more how a player progresses over a season at each level than the raw statistics.

Starlin Caba enters the MLB pipeline Top 100 - now have 5 prospects in the 100 (Painter, Miller, Abel, Crawford and Caba). Really can’t say enough about the job that DD has done resurrecting this organization across the board after the end of the Gillick/Amaro era and the Klentack disaster.

Only a few teams (Cubs, Rockies, Mets) have 5 or more in the Top 100.
