And updated ESPN. Painter 13 and Abel 27. A note on players rising within the system lists Leandro Pineda and Caleb Ricketts. Not top 100 but maybe closing in on system top 10. Pineda is a little interesting. Young for Jersey Shore and he gets a prominent lineup spot so the Phillies like him. More tools than performance at this point. Power might have to wait until Reading to show up in the stats.

I'm not sure how anyone who's watched a Reading game walks away preferring Ethan Wilson over De La Cruz.

The preference is a leftover from the dramatic difference in draft status, undrafted vs. second round. Here are the FG 2023 FV ratings, Wilson on top:

Seems like they are betting on Wilson's hit tool.

Given his age, and his inability to hit so far in the FCL, I think we can write this off as another stupid LA signing.
Hopefully, they've made some changes, because the track record of $1+ LA signings the last decade or so is nothing short of dismal.

On the other hand, why does Marcus Lee Sang get no respect?

And a signing Phillies were in a position to walk away from or at least halve the bonus. How many potential CFs who simply could not hit have we signed, simply because they could run really fast (though he has a 70, not an 80 rating) and have an advance feel for CF defense have we wasted a #1 draft pick or almost all of our international budget on? How much was the scouting report on his hit tool and power potential skewed by thinking we were evaluating a 15-year old, rather than a 16-year old? How much did the certainty that MLB would sit him for a season further reduce his value. Total debacle, but Sal still has his job. Sometimes the Phillies seem seriously unserious. Yes, he is a total bust. Yes, this should have been expected before the team handed him the monster check. Yes, this makes us look foolish and reinforces the impression of the locals that we are the organization more than willing to waste huge $ on mediocre talent.

It is not an awful list. I do feel that many of these lists by national writers are way too dependent on previous rankings. Not sure there is huge difference between Wilson and De La Cruz though so that relative ranking does not bother me. All the rankings from 8-17 seem like a bunch of 35-40 FV prospects who are pretty similar.

Kerkering was elevated because I think he is the most likely reliever to make the majors on the list. Baker is close too.

We should get to see Micah Ottenbreit in a little while. His TJ surgery was early last season so he is over a year into his rehab. It might not be more than 10-20 innings this year but it would be nice to see what we have there.

In some good news, Justin Crawford has slipped into both the BA (98) and MLB.com (99) top 100s after they graduated a few players. He has probably passed McGarry on most prospect lists as McGarry has been inconsistent. And hitting .345 in full season ball does not hurt.

The Athletic (paywall) with an update on how every 1st round pick from a year ago is faring. Outside of megaprospect and #1 overall pick Jackson Holliday and college-to-majors Zach Neto, Justin Crawford is arguably performing as well or better than anyone in the class:

Holliday is just at another level but should be.

He is as good or competitive with everyone else relative to age and level though. Major league pedigree is always good. Probably a reason they are connected to George Lombard Jr. too.

I’m not nearly as educated as Squire and others on these prospects, but that is as good a list as the Phillies have had to my memory since at least 2015 (top 5 of Crawford, Nola, Maikel, Quinn, Eflin)? Maybe longer? Or am I fooling myself (distinct possibility)?

Lee would be very close to the top 10; he's had injury issues for the last 12 months.

Three very low-level players are really intriguing: Caba (SS), Tait (C) (16 years old and tearing up the DSL), and Samuel Aldegheri (LHSP). I think I'd include Aldegheri ahead of Boyd. Nobody knows what to make of Tait, who is hitting cleanup in the DSL at 16 years old, and crushing the ball.
