He's not playing because of his contract, he's playing because he's still the best choice and the Phillies don't have the money to eat or trade him and also replace him. He was well worth his contract from June 1 on. And veteran free agents just get paid for reasons that have nothing to do with performance. That is something they have earned in an unfair system that cheats them when they are in their 20s.
He could certainly play his way out of a job as the season progresses, or into a true part-time role next year. He could also have a good year this year and move to DH next year. They'd still have to sign a new OF next year probably. There is probably never going to be a Marsh/Crawford/Rojas OF. Moving Turner to LF or CF seems unlikely.
This year is this year. The core vets below Harper and Schwarber have to get it done (Turner, Nick, JT who actually did do well after his surgery) and the younger guys (Bohm, Marsh, Stott) even more so. If they don't they will either be sellers or much bigger buyers then we'd like in July. And then Schwarber is the real crossroads in terms of how they spend their money and shape the line-up in '26 and '27, even if Crawford and Miller both nail down spots.
The night/day stat about Nick is interesting, I wonder why, and is that typical? Also not sure it's meaningful (versus home road or platoon or even just the granular match-ups teams use that we don't even know about or understand). I always think there are guys who struggle more in the day, due to both irregular hours and difficult light.
