The easiest way to fix the OF is to somehow trade Castellanos. His defense is so bad (Luzinski-esque) that it is almost impossible for him to hit well enough to overcome the damage. He was less than 1 WAR this year because of the horrible first half. In 3 season he has averaged 0.8 WAR with the Phillies. Hays, Marsh and Rojas are better and obviously cheaper.
If he can be traded, even for essentially nothing, they have to jump at it. There is no sign that he will improve, he is one of the worst defensive OF in history (-15 dWAR, 10 straight negative seasons). Age is only going to make that worse.
The earlier than expected move of Harper to 1B really messed up the plan. Castellanos and Schwarber could have been 1B / DH and been acceptable, but being forced to put one in the OF is very difficult, even with the superior Rojas helping to cover. One has to go.
They could look to improve on Hayes as a 4th OF / platoon partner, but the cost / WAR for Marsh, Rojas and the other OF are needed because our 1B, C, SS, DH and pitching staff use up so much of the salary.
Absolutely cannot trade prospects. We need pretty much all of them because frankly our development has been so bad over the last few years that some of our 4-5 prospects will fall off a wall. Look at Abel, he went from 2nd (1st among people playing) to almost a non-prospect like lightning. We need a few of these guys to backfill with cheap solid play as players like Turner and Harper become money sinks.
