Looking at available CFers, Herrera was the safe and best bet. Buxton and Marte were quickly no longer available. I am sure DD weighed the asking price for Keimaier vs. re-signing Herrera and made the right call. Herrera could still be traded, too. Hopefully they get through to him to be more like the 2016 and 2017 Herrera and stop trying to be a home run hitter.
Bryant/Schwaber/Conforto/Castillanos may hit a ton, but they do not make LF great.
I don't think Bryant is worth $25 million per, but its not my money. The asking prices for Reynolds/Mullins/Chapman/Laureano are way to expensive right now. But the Phillies cannot waste Wheeler and Harper any longer.
I don't envy DD right now - no real depth to trade from and pretty limited in available funds and stuck with some bad contracts.
Since Moniakâs âgoodâ at bats in the majors have been when he struck out on 4 pitches instead of 3 I canât agree with any plan that involves him. Haseley is also simply not an option to even consider until he proves that he can play baseball again, what I saw last year implies that he might very well be done. He wasnât even close to being a ML player, or even a AA player.
Per Jeff Passan, Hand is now a Phillie. My concern with Hand is that he stunk in Aug/Sep last year the way that Ian Kennedy stunk for the Phillies.

"Things went awry for Hand following a July trade to the Blue Jays, as the lefty never really found his footing in Toronto. Hand was scored upon in five of his 11 appearances with the Jays, ultimately yielding 10 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits and three walks in just 8 2/3 innings. Hand wound up being designated for assignment in August and claimed by the Mets, where he turned things around to an extent: seven runs (four earned) on a dozen hits and five walks with 14 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings."
I agree with David's comments above. DD is in a tough spot. to acquire in a trade they will have to give up more than is needed to. one of the things I keep hearing and seeing from a lot of people is that the Phils can't afford to waste Bryce Harper and Wheeler. What are they, 34, 35? they could have 3, 4 more years of production left. I would not be backed into a panic trade.

Plenty of dead wood on the 40 that can be removed for the new additions. I count at least 7 or 8 spots that could be freed up. First off, MLB doesnât seem to have updated Romeroâs moved to the 60 day dl. That might be one spot there.
Emanuel, Lopez, Jones, Moss, Sheriff, and Nelson will not mean anything to the team. Haseley is damaged goods.
Moniak would probably get claimed by someone who thinks they can fix him. Same with Sanchez and Morales. I donât think we would realistically Dfa these guys.
Stubbs or Sands would probably be last to go.
I would not be sorry to see any of these names to go if we got an impact addition. If we can afford the money, I would prefer Bryant as I think he is a decent defender over what is left for 3B / OF. Plus I think that combo with Bryce makes for a motivated pair. If we can afford him, I would prefer that over getting rid of our few prospects. I am hoping Bohm can be worked out as I am not ready to give up on him. We have to make progress in using the up years of Bryce, Wheeler and hopefully Nola.
If they were to get Bryant, they would have moved the needle far enough that I can start to talk about Chapman. I guess the question is if any other club regards him high enough to give up any of their top prospects. For Chapman and Trevino I could do Abel/Rojas and whatever else to fill out the deal. I'm sure an A's fan would spit at the notion.
How can a team have the reigning MVP in RF and still have a horrifically bad outfield?
The 2019 and 2020 Phillies were unbelievably bad in most advanced defensive metrics. Somehow this team is actually shaping up to be worse defensively, with many of the same players here, just older. Add in Bohmâs adventures at 3B and God-Knows-What-Bum in RF and weâll, we can win if our pitchers throw a 27 Up, 27 strikeout game, but other than thatâŚ
I have been impressed with Herreraâs effort when he doesnât have a job and has to fight his way âbackâ. When he is considered a âlockâ on the team he has showed up out of shape and put minimal effort into his job. Letâs hope I am wrong.
We really need right handed power pitchers, because if any right handed batter pulls the ball we are in immense trouble. We literally need every opponent to hit the ball to RF, it is the only defensive position where we are even average (not counting Catcher).
