I should note that there were not "yes" and "no" votes. I believe that each voter was limited to voting for no more than four candidates, and individual candidates had to reach a threshold number of votes to be elevated. So, it's not that anybody voted "no" on Allen - it's that, given a very rich ballot, he simply got crowded out on one too many ballots.

It's not a particularly fair system - but admission to the HOF has never been "fair," or based on any objective threshold criteria.

Stark (who also wrote a piece after Allen's death last year) with some good analysis. TLDR, Allen's case is pretty overwhelming with modern stats, and almost no one on that list probably considers them (wRC+, for instance).

Lock outs will do that for you. MLB is putting a lot of stock into the theory that the public will be flocking back when it's all over. We'll see about that. Baseball could be developing into a wedge sport stuck between football and basketball. Not quite down to the level of hockey but sliding. The NFL and NBA have mastered the skill of being a year round enterprise. MLB, not so much.

We could still see some minor league deals but I assume the best candidates for those will still want to wait for the market to play out (and/or be sure they can't get a major league deal).

I think we had a couple of these names before, Kelly for certain. And interesting group of guys to try out for middle relief or be injury reserves at AAA -- all 30 or younger this year, all at least AAA experience and most MLB, all high K-rate. On the down-side, most are rather wild. An audition among potential relievers like this is what the team should be planning.

I don't see where Michael Kellly ever played for a Phillies affiliate but Bedrosian was on the major league roster this past season. He presumably still has the best shot (or as at least the biggest name) but there will be bigger (a la Kintzler and Watson) after the lockout, and optionality will remain important.

"AAA" depth means something else entirely during the lockout too. With no major leaguers in Clearwater they will probably take more bodies until the minor league season actually starts.

A note from MLBTR

Dec. 15: Bedrosian’s contract was actually agreed to on Dec. 1 but only formally announced by the team this week, MLBTR has learned. That explains any confusion surrounding how the deal was possible, as Bedrosian otherwise appeared ineligible to sign during the lockout by virtue of the fact that he ended the 2021 season on the Phillies’ Major League roster.

I think there is a lot of logic in a Phils/Dodgers deal centered around Nola and Bellinger. As far as I understand, Bellinger is good in center, but his speed was down a notch after the broken femur. He’s one of those guys who’s performance you can blame a lot on injuries the last year. In as much as I love the durability and #2-ishmess of Nola, I’ve also seen that enough that I’d never trust him in a game that counts.

Bellinger made 16 million, so their contracts almost cancel each other, but tilted in the favor of Nola. And even with his struggles, Nola came far closer to earning his pay than Bellinger did. So in a swap, the Phils get more back. Ideally, Mitch White would be a durable mlb ready arm, but I don’t trust that he his, and my preference is Bobby Miller.

In that scenario there has to be a fallback rotation option to replace Nola next year, which there isn’t without signing someone for the 15 million they don’t have, so I guess some part of the roster is going to be a hole next year.

I know this is reflexive Negadelphian, but given the all-around performance of the two organizations, a trade like this surely ends with Bellinger never returning to form and Nola winning a Cy Young.

I'm not sure the Phillies get more back either, because while they'd have to pay more money, they get a player with one extra year of control.

If they're not gonna exceed the CBT and want to trade for a decent CF it's gonna cost them some prospects. Even Kiermaier, while older and expensive and no kind of hitter, is coming off two really good WAR years. But yeah, no matter how you look at it there is going to be a hole so long as SS is a question mark and the CF isn't guaranteed to be a big bat (be that OBP or SLG).

Well Dodgers just signed Bellanger to $17 miilonfollar deal. That reduces the likelihood of that trade with Nola.

I guess we will have to wait until the lockout is over to see what unique deal DD works out to give us a CF.

I don't think it was ever very likely the Dodgers were going to trade him but settling on his contract (which happened before 12/1) doesn't make it more or less likely. He wasn't a free agent. In the theoretical Nola trade it would be two controllable players, albeit one from arbitration and one from a long-term contract. It wasn't like the Dodgers were going to trade him because he'd be hard to sign or too expensive (he's still too expensive, if that's actually an issue for them).

Counting on Kiermeier to last a whole season is probably foolish. We’re either going to have to roll with what we’ve got in CF or bite the bullet and make a trade.
