Well, I still wouldn't sell early on Nola (unless they are not looking good at the deadline). And the reason to not sell early on Hoskins is no one's buying. He is flawed, but I'm not prepared to move on from him and call it addition by subtraction when we really can't be sure if Castellanos will bounce back, or what kind of bat Bohm really is.

Don't get me wrong it is all worth considering, but not clear-cut.

Hoskins has a 3.1 WAR this year to Schwarber's 2.1 - will moving Schwarber to 1B actually raise his WAR or might it even get slightly worse if he doesn't take to the new - albeit less important - position?

A lot still depends on Harper too. We'll find that out soon enough I guess.

I’m not sure that moving Schwarber with his groin and knee problems to first is a good idea. I’d stick with Hall and Bohm at 1b if Hoskins isn’t there.

I mean, I get there's a lot of pivoting but I would think 1B is still less taxing than running and jumping in LF. Bohm is not going to end up at 1B unless he finds another level offensively.

Bohm has improved his fielding to the point that moving him would be silly, is there another 3B in the system?

On the other hand, it's hard to imagine a worse fielding 1B than Hoskins, who really needs to DH.
Same with Schwarber in LF.
And if Harper has elbow surgery, he'll be limited to DH next season.

Well, he won't, that's kind of one of the reasons to have the surgery. But he won't be in the line-up at all for a month or two, and yeah, he might be weaker on throws (but still probably a better all-around fielder than Nick, despite the last few weeks of fun highlights. btw, a few posters here used to frequently opine that Herrera should get an Adderall prescription; that seems to be the case for Nick as well, by his own words. Or maybe just a mental skills coach like Alvarado).

This off season I would think the phillies will continue to build their bullpen and need to find a legitimate closer. If that it Dominguez then so be it...then if that's the case, they need another big arm in the pen. As the astros have shown...a solid pen makes a huge difference.

They will also sign a big bat and maybe a SS....Turner or Correa.

Also...another starter.

Psychological performance counselors can help. The team should have someone on the payroll to be available foe anyone interested. Maybe they do have such folks already. Having someone around the team regularly would allow players to get to know him/her and might be beneficial.

I believe that they have one already.

Probably more than one, but a lot of guys work with private coaches too. Alvarado did.

Castellanos has a private coach but it's for hitting.

Rebuilding the bullpen around 2-3 core guys--hopefully we now have a couple of them in Dominguez and Alvarado--will be an annual task. See, 2008-11 with Lidge, Madson and Romero being the core guys for the most part.

Team paid staff counselors would be beneficial for the minor leaguers, who likely don’t have and cannot afford a private person. I am sure they have staff to help the young players adjust to the life style, especially for the Latin American players new to the US. Someone in the “performance enhancement”area could be helpful as well.

Again, they probably already are doing this.

Brogdon is one of those guys, had a rough stretch the second half but has been fine in the post-season.
When his change is on, he's got closer potential. It's an almost unhittable pitch, and he might have a little more velo as he ages and maybe adds a little strength.

I think McGarry is headed to the pen, Baker is a riser and they have some other arms, Morales, Lehman, Sullivan, Moore, Schultze, Schultz, none you can count on, but could be possible surprises. And Alvarado, Bellatti and Nelson suggest they can identify and coach up AAA plus types.

Waiting on the kids is fine but no one you mentioned with the exception of maybe morales is a bullpen arm next year. Phillies will have to go out and look for some arms since a couple of the current guys on the big club will not be back.

I think Baker is in the bullpen the second half of next season if not sooner. Nobody else is a difference-maker though. Even Morales has work to do. The bullpen is in decent shape but still has a few holes especially if Eflin is not part of it. We'll need to add/sign a couple of arms to fill it out.

I suspect they will go with the same approach. A handful of $6-10 million guys, not a top free agent on a multi-year deal. Those are the guys you want to develop, or trade for before they've fully developed. Plus a few fungibles of course. Last thing I want to see is Edwin Diaz blowing saves while making $18 million (except for the Mets).

No reason to get in the $15 million closer game with Seranthony and Alvarado. But a midlevel arm and maybe another Alvarado/Coonrod trade or two probably makes sense. We all lament the Curtis Mead trade with the Rays, but I think I make the Garrett Clevinger for Alvarado trade again if I have a chance.

Bowden does not mention the Phillies too much here with the top free agents. Interesting that he has Eflin getting 3/36.

I think Eflin will get 3/36. Quality arm when he is healthy and seems to be real good guy. That said, at that price, I would go in another direction.

3/36 million is a lot to pay for someone who has had his health issues. That's a pretty large wager on an unknown.
