I am a born in 1969 Gen Xer and the Phillies weren't good for most of my mid twenties to early thirties (and their roster was something of a revolving door during those rebuild years of the late '90's), so I kind of missed them being my contemporaries. They pretty much went from guys who were all older than me to guys who were all younger than me.

As a St. Joe's basketball fan, I'm seeing the kids of guys who played when I was there now playing college ball (and Jameer Nelson, Jr. whose father stepped on to campus eight years after I graduated).

One thing to remember about the hitters 25 and under, most had two years of development disrupted by COVID, some more than others, but most missed as much as 500 PA and also dealt with other issues during that period.

So I'd expect more surprises from players (league wide) over the next couple years as they get into normal routines and catch up on lost development time. It's also a good reason to buy low on young players who may have been rushed and struggled (look for these kind of bargains to fill out your AAA roster).

After this season, I expect the "COVID effect" to gradually diminish, but this offseason provides both an opportunity to bargain hunt and a reason to be patient with your own players.

Castellanos is under contract for four more years at $20 million per. He's 30. I don't think he'd bring much in the way of prospects; if that contract is tradable, I would expect it would be in return for taking on somebody else's big, suspect contract, not for prospects who are actually worth getting.

Nola would be very tradable, IMHO, but more likely to be traded at next season's trade deadline than this winter (if the Phils are not contending - but they will be). The Phils hold a $16 million club option for 2023; that's a very reasonable price for a pitcher who has now pitched more innings than any other NL pitcher in 2022, and put up 6.0 bWAR. I mean, $16 million for 6 WAR? I know people are unhappy with him because he's kind of hit the wall here...but 205 innings, 3.25 ERA, 6 WAR? Yeah, they could get prospects for Nola, but they have holes in the rotation as it is (Wheeler, Nola, Suarez, ??, ??). Gibson and Syndergaard are free agents; Eflin is likely going to stay in relief (I'm assuming it's a better use of his creaky knees). After that, it's Falter, Sanchez, Painter, Abel, McGarry. Three of them in the Opening Day rotation (assuming Nola is traded)?

The Phillies have hung together deep enough into the post-season and Hoskins has done enough to argue they should keep him for next year and if they are a strong contender at trade deadline should keep him and QO him next off-season. This off-season a SP and SS are the priorities. Let Segura walk, move Stott to 2B. Maton can be a bench IF sub.

I want the Phillies to extend Nola this off-season.

The Phillies have plenty of money. For both Turner and Rodon, maybe not, but losing Nola and adding Rodon doesn't make you better either. Either they pay the tax again to add a pitcher that good or it will be someone more modest as the #4. Especially if you extend Nola (also in favor of that).

I'm also open to keeping Segura and just using that "Turner money" on a pitcher. I also don't rule out trading Hoskins, but it's not a must. Unfortunately Castellanos isn't going anywhere, and would only subtract from a trade package, not get you more.

Phillies are already a 90+ win team (87 with Harper effectively MIA for 2/3 of the season).
At this point they should get their finances stable, keep building the organization, and stay out of top money free agency.

Let Hoskins play out the string, pick up Nola's option year but don't extend him (because you'll end up paying for his downslope seasons at a premium price).

You can only carry so many big contracts, and as this season showed, you need a strong organization b/c injuries and players falling off is inevitable.

In two years, if you clear a bunch of salary, you'll know which kids stepped up and where you need to spend.
But why not go into next season with this team and maybe add a little more pitching depth? A SP and a RP.
Start building depth at AA and AAA ball, and find out how good Painter, Abel, McGarry, Baker, Rojas, Marchan et al are, and whether Marsh, Veirling, Stott, Bohm, Maton, Sosa and Guthrie have any more upside.

This is why I say we trade or non tender Hoskins…to be able to sign a 4+ war SS/2B this season when we have several options available. We can also fill out the pitching staff and stay below the tax prior to the deadline. I don’t dislike Hoskins but the net result for the team is much better.

It will be a fun off-season. Plenty of good arguments for every possible approach - aggressive vs. conservative, sentimental vs. ruthless, free-spending vs. thrifty. I think this front office is really just getting started.

But they also won't have any trouble extending Nola if Nola is willing, and it will save them more money than if they let him hit free agency. The dead money risk will be there either way (and whether it's for him or a new FA pitcher).

Probably would amend the Nola comment a bit. They will save money on him now compared to the scenario where he has one more good season playing out his option. One more very good year from Nola and he will be more expensive. One mediocre year and they might save some money. One injured year and they would save lots of money.

Well, if they can convince Nola of those latter two possibilities he might give them a hometown discount and take the security!

Houston might have enough issues trying to resign Verlander and then manage the arbitration years of their young pitchers to even consider a free agent like Nola. Valdez and Javier are going to get expensive in a couple of years if they keep pitching well.

I hear you guys on that but Nola has really shown no signs of wanting to be back South (anymore than Wheeler ever did). Baton Rouge isn't really that far especially when you're rich. I'd be more worried about West Coast teams/$$$. If he wants the biggest deal he'll go get it and the Phillies probably won't be the team giving it. If he likes it here, especially, now, there will be talks.

This is no time to fall in love with players based on past performance. It is what was done with the ‘08 club. If the organization has reaped the best years out of a player and the near future is one of decline, it’s better to sell early than late. Especially if such a move opens up opportunities to improve the overall performance of the club.
Moving out The right side of the IF corrects some deficiencies. Sign Turner for SS; Harper back in RF; Castellanos to LF and Schwarber to 1B increases the offense and especially the defense of the club.
If Nola can be extended at a reasonable rate, he should be kept. If not move him on. Wheeler is the ace of the staff now. A healthy Ranger is a 3. A 2 can be found also a 4 and a 5. Painter, Abel and the like will probably be the back end of the rotation after the AS break.
As we’ve seen this year a roster is a season long work in progress. It’s not how you start but how you finish.
