I wonder if Turner takes them out of that. He was always one of the second tier affordable arms with some upside to target.

Now that Turner is actually signed I reckon it really isn't that important to replace Harper's bat - that a patchwork of hitters or focusing more on defense actually will be the way to go. But, going after that higher-end starter would still be even better.

From the various reports, Phillies definitely expected to exceed the luxury tax, but also Dombrowski says it's unlikely they'd sign another QO free agent. A "mid-range" starter (whatever that means in this market) and a bullpen piece (Thomson stressed it didn't have to be a closer because the Phillies don't believe in closers).

Since we were $25 million under before these last 2 free agents who cost slightly more than $25 million combined, it looks like we are right at the limit now. Still at least one more bullpen arm to add if not two.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I'd shut down the money machine after Turner, Walker and Strahm. I'd like to see guys like Morales and Baker and McGarry fill out the bullpen spots if you need them. I also probably like Cristopher Sanchez more than most.

I'm not sure we need to spend any more significant money but we could use some lower end bullpen arms...i would be afraid to go in to the season depending on too many rookies.

If there's a red flag with Strahm, it is that he alternates good years and bad and 2022 was a good year. At least with his hair we have another guy who looks like he stepped out of a time machine from the Renaissance.

I think they're probably close to done with the bullpen myself as far as prominent free agency. Find another cheap pick-up by either free agency (like Bellati) or trade (like Coonrod/Alvarado), guarantee some veteran $2 million or just go with minor league invites. The last time they tried the latter they got it wrong (Kintzler) but better to be wrong that way than the Familia way.

Even without Morales, Baker and McGarry you've already got:

And then Vasquez, Nittoli, Ortiz. Tayler Scott. As well as Falter (if Painter makes the team) and Sanchez (whom they probably should commit to converting).

Basicially you just need Coonrod to take a step towards coming back and one guy to come out of the rest of the group (two if you give up on Nelson). The names of the rest of the group may change, but the pedigree (waiver claims/youngsters) doesn't necessarily have to.

I strongly disagree that we should "stand pat" and fill the rest of our bullpen with pitchers of various unknown caliber. With the acquisition of Turner and Walker this is now a World Series caliber team. I fail to see why we should be miserly about another quality reliever when we already $230,000,00o in vested in the club. Right now our RH relievers consist of SD, Brogdon and Bellati. And we now know that SD has to be treated with velvet gloves and does not respond well to extended us. Thus we need one more high quality RH reliever. We don't have Eflin or Robertson to step in as closer when SD makes his inevitable trip(s. With the amount of money already invested, go out and get one more high quality RH and then fill the final two spots with guys from our system such as Morales, McGarry of Coonrod Thus I would like to see us with 6 quality proven relievers and tow more lottery type pick for the last two spots.

I’d still like another bp arm, but we can wait and try to score a good deal with someone. Guys get injured or are ineffective. I don’t really want our prospects pitching in the pen…I want them in AAA/AA getting regular innings.

Not really true. His WAR last year was +0.3, better than his -0.2 the prior year but not comparing to his back-to-back good years in 2018 and 2019.

There is no perfect team and you cannot fill every perceived hole with a FA -- at some point the spending has to stop. Painter will be the 6th SP, if he makes the rotation then one of the current top 5 starters will go to the pen. We have other minor leaguers who can challenge for pen spots. I wouldn't put Abel in the pen, but wouldn't hesitate on McGarry.

Proven relievers still guarantee you nothing, and hurt you more than they help you in many cases. Particularly for the Phillies. If they sign another $7-10 million guy and he doesn't work out he won't be replaced (Knebel wasn't, unless you count Eflin, and Familia was only replaced by Robertson because he was cheap).

I also think there's zero chance they will sign another reliever who makes more than Strahm. My argument is more that they can go with a $2-4 million depth guy instead of a $6 million guy. Adding another at the deadline is inevitable (unless it's Abel or McGarry or Morales stepping into a high-leverage role). Better to save the payroll for that because the high-salary guy will cost you less in trade.

He didn't even really pitch in 2021. 6.2 innings and not until August (then I guess he got shut down again). Can't really count 2019 either because he was a starter. Probably still fair enough to worry that having pitched well in 2022 he won't be as good in 2023, since that's just the way it goes. He wasn't overused though, and has mostly been good.

Are the name guys that are available right now really any better than the ones that will be looking for ST/ minor league try out deals? Jansen to the RSox for the terms that he got is silly. His physical condition has red flags all over it. Signing guys now just to sign someone isn’t prudent.
