Looks like we picked Noah Song in the rule 5 draft. Looks like a kid who pitched one year and then fulfilled his Navy commitment. We did not lose anybody in the major league draft.

Phillies selected RHP Noah Song from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 Draft. He has a military committment since being drafted in 2019 by the Red Sox. Apparently we do not need to keep him on the 40 and our Rule 5 obligation does not begin until his military commitment is up.

Also the Phillies did not lose anybody in the Major League Portion so they retained LHP Erik Miller, RHP Andrew Schultz, RHP McKinley Moore and OF Carlos De La Cruz

I think we still have to keep Song on the 40-man roster all winter though before he can go on a reserve list.

More here. Looks like he HAS requested a service waiver. The Trump administration got rid of that but not sure Biden has weighed in. I am admittedly intrigued by a guy who could be more talented than most rule 5 picks. Almost no wear and team on the arm too.

He was a borderline number one pick who fell to the 4th round in the draft because of the Navy commitment. Ranked as high as 4th in the Red Sox system. Not ranked now, but that is because he has not pitched at all rather than any injury or poor performance. Played with Bohm on that Olympic qualifying team in 2019 that lost to Mexico but that night have been his last competitive performance.

And in good news, it looks like he does not count at all yet:

I mean whether or not he's on the 40, do we have to offer him back if he's not on the 26 man roster?

Assume he has to play immediately. Maybe if he gets the go-ahead to play they can swing a 30-day minor league rehab, but the assumption from the Phillies is likely that he has a shot at actually surviving in a major league bullpen now with his stuff (and probably maturity).

Maybe the Phillies could cut a side deal to keep him but that might be difficult if he still has first round stuff (i.e. what incentive would the Red Sox have to do such a deal?). I wonder if he got approval to play late in 2022 the Phillies could send him to Arizona or a foreign league and at least get an extended look at him.

That's a mighty big loophole (I mean, in that if he doesn't have to be on the Phillies' 40-man roster why did he have to be added to Boston's?)

Well, once he's active he probably has to be on the ML roster, but until then they can carry him without using a roster or 40 man spot - and when he'll be active is a big question mark.

Now whether they can get a 30 day exemption for conditioning, is a key question.

He has to be added to the 40, but he doesn't count since he is on the military reserve list (which apparently operates in the offseason too).

I wonder if he needs to be optioned every year this happens so the Red Sox did not want to start using up his options by putting him on this list which could last more than a year or two. The standard military commitment is 5 years though he has applied for a waiver after 2 (which is what lots of players like David Robinson did years ago). Or the Red Sox just made an error by not taking advantage of this themselves.

Can a pitcher take 3-5 years off and play in the majors almost immediately. Odds are pretty narrow so while this was a clever move, it might just be a fascinating footnote.

Well, early in the season you could just have him work in the bullpen for a month or two with a pitching coach, strengthening his arm and working on his secondary pitches, then put him in at garbage time his first few appearances. If his stuff is that good, especially since he'll be 23-24 years old and physically mature, it shouldn't take that long to get him to a point where he'd be respectable - he did pitch 4 years in college.

Well, we have certainly stopped our "wait out the FA market and sign whoever is left at a discount" philosophy. We realistically have very little money and very few spots left.

I think we may be down to a couple AAAA pitchers and minor league utility players.

I mean, when was that actually the philosophy since 2019? Even in Dombrowski's first year when the big pieces were re-signs, they weren't cheap, and waiting out the market provided no benefit. Last year they went big on Schwarber and didn't really get any benefit from being late on Castellanos.

But if they want to spend more money they can spend more money. Now that they've done what they've done and are almost certain to exceed the CBT, going up another tier is hardly a big deal. That's the water they want to swim in with the Dodgers and the Mets and they don't have the discounts or internal talent the Braves or Astros have.
