Looking For A Match In A Jonathan Schoop Trade

A creative suggestion for the Phillies. Certainly hurts Bohm who has been somewhat better lately. Segura moves back to 3B, and Schoop at 2B likely improves the Phillies on both offense and defense. It really all depends on what we expect from Bohm in second half, and will a move like this cause any strife.

I wouldn't ttrade for Schoop. The Phillies have played well enough of late that, with the Braves losing Acuna, it is reasonable to add help at the deadline, but they should be looking to add pitching. I don't think Schoop helps our D. He is negative dWar this year and only positive 0.2 to 0.3 dwar the prior 3 seasons. There's a reason he was moved to 1B.

The case for Schoop in that item is that he was terrible before May 7 and has been hot since then (over 253 PAs) but Bohm has been no less hot, albeit for only 120 plate appearances (June and July). And the same goes for Rhys who had a .582 OPS in June, but it is .931 in the last 28 days. I think you need a better player than Schoop to displace either from the line-up, and probably need a SS or a true 3B to really improve the defense.

Didi still strikes me as the guy to dislodge but he's a managerial favorite with another year on his contract and the upgrades would either be expensive or don't look like upgrades (Simmons can't hit either, Story's OPS+ is below 100).

If you're gonna make the play it has to be Kris Bryant. Can play 3B, CF and 1B. Which would really make us too right-handed, especially with Didi not hitting. But that would certainly take care of the bench make-up, and the only person who actually loses their job is Herrera and/or Williams some of the time.

Given it is still unlikely they will exceed the CBT or squander a lot of assets, I think I stick with the starting 8 and get two pitchers (one of each) off a better shelf than in past years. The wait one year rule no longer exists, right? Wonder who this year's Carson Ragsdale will be.

I'm not sure I read the stats the same way. Schoop has positive metrics at 2b this year and every year of his career. I think the negative d war this year is derived from the bulk of his innings at 1b. His range numbers and defensive runs saved at 2b are solid if not good. He lead the AL last year in 2B total zone runs and fielding percentage. Segura had above average 3b defensive numbers in small sample last year, while Bohm's is near the bottom in many categories.

This is the other problem right now. The NL East is there for the taking but only if the Phillies really want it. If the Mets want it more they're going to spend more or offer more in trade or both.

I'm still fine if we are sellers, I just don't want to be unserious buyers.

It can still change on a dime! It would be nice to strike early and have a better team for the rest of the July games, but the market moves at its own pace. I seem to recall someone here predicting Dombrowki would improve the team or make a dramatic deal a month ago, and that certainly didn't happen.

I don't want "within reason" though. That's what they did the past three years, and they failed three times.

I think I probably fall into the do little camp now with the caveat of perhaps selling right in the days before the deadline if the next 2 weeks do not go well. This roster is just not worth investing significant prospects towards the tiny chance of improving our playoff prospects. I am fine trading non top 30 type prospects and using money to fill holes (if we are $5-$10 million under the luxury tax threshold we should be able to add some pro-rated salary to get some players for nominal prospects.

If we are 6+ games out at the deadline I think about selling. We probably won't get much for our nominal pieces, but some combination of guys like Cutch and Bradley and Neris will bring something back that will help in the future. But if we stay 4-6 back, I think I am comfortable with the "do little" strategy of the past couple of years.

We can make competitive offers, the question is do we want to? The issue isn't other teams saying "sorry, your guys aren't good enough" - the trade price for rentals at the deadline is not nearly as high as it was even just three years ago - it's just a question of what the Phillies can afford to lose from the farm system.

And also if they can pursue players they might keep beyond this year (whether because they are under contract or by re-signing them.

If I thought all they cared about in not pursuing a Kris Bryant was protecting the farm, great, but I think the real issue is $.

If the Bohm and Cutch we saw in June was not mirage, this team can make a run, though consistency from Hoskins and some bounce-back from Didi is also required. Perhaps the line-up and the bench is actually good enough. But I don't think the pitching moves can be small, i.e. Drew Smyly or Brandon Workman 2.0. Maybe not two big pieces, but at least one.

The Phillies would be at or near the front of the line if Byron Buxton became available. As @Ken_Rosenthal said the Twins are first attempting to lock him up. Tricky negotiation tough: superstar who’s been hurt a lot.
