My god we really screwed up with Howard. From top 50 prospect to a part of a trade for a 33 year old starter and retread reliever.

Looks like the AAV salaries total about $11.5 million. $9.3 of that Gibson which also applies for 2022.

So this is about $4.2 to $4.3 million towards the competitive balance tax threshold. Cot's has us $7.5 million under but others have quoted closer to $4 million. I am guessing this takes us up to the line but not over.

They must have concluded Howard will never be able to start, or he's got attitude/approach problems that they can't fix or both. You don't pay that price for Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy unless you have evaluated the prospects negatively internally.
