Phillies at the Trade Deadline

Morales has been awful for Reading. Have seen him pitch several times, no movement on his pitches, Still he is only 21 and some slight mechanics changes can help but I wouldn't consider him that high. Maybe the year off really effected him. Maybe the jump from A ball to AA ball is too much. Don't know I just don't see a top prospect out of him. Just my opinion.

Oh I agree. And I know pitchers go through slumps like hitters do.. but since they are out there once every 5 days its noticed more than a hitter going 0-20 over 5 games. So I would hope thats what it is.

But I also see his career ERA is 4.42 and wonder what he did at age 33 to be pitching over a run and a half better than that. And... I wonder if his spin rates have changed...

I don’t see much of an up or down. 2021 looks pretty consistent with his career spin rates. The big thing that sticks out is Gibson now throws a cutter, or it has become a go-to pitch. A good cutter can have career changing effects

Doing some advanced research on Kibson... This year he has a barrel percentage of 3.8 which is in the 94th percentile in baseball and is a career best for him by far.

Also.. spin rate is down slightly from the beginning of the year but not significant.

Other thing to take into consideration.. baseball savant shows him giving up 25% more HRs in philly vs texas.

The case of Spencer Howard is the perfect example of how inept the Phillies are. Guy rose to a top 50 prospect. Had value as a trade piece or a cuter ML piece for the Phillies. They then yank him around all year and now he has little value as either.

Ogle has missed a ton of time pre-pandemic to injury, but former 4th round pick making the jump from high A to AAA. I think they are paying a premium for the option years and control, but like it isn't a nothing.

I liked Gutierrez more than most but I kinda like this. Guy has succeeded at every level and is lefty reliever in AAA.

It is outside the box thinking. We do have catching depth throughout the system with Marchan, Duran, Ohoppe etc. Plus our MLB catcher is signed long term. You never have enough pitching depth especially at the higher levels. How good Ogle will be is TBD. Its a lottery ticket in my opinion

Maybe someone like Falter or Sanchez could be on the move too to take away upper minors LH pitching depth. They are more long relievers, but they are often in big league shorter relief roles.

I have a hard time thinking that they are thinking that far ahead. I think the Pirates really wanted the catching prospect and the Phillies saw a chance to add a lefty who could help them.

So we traded a catcher who was hitting well for a AAA pitcher on a bad team that can’t find the plate.

Hate to believe he can help at the major league level if the Pirates weren’t using him.

Bad, dumb trade. I guess the Pirates really wanted Gutierrez, shame we gave them what they wanted for a guy who immediately becomes the worst bullpen pitcher on a bad bullpen.

After a fairly bad offseason I am losing confidence in Dombrowski fast. Resigned Realmuto (highly positive), but other than that hard to be excited about much. We still have a very thin starting staff, a horrendous bullpen and an average offense. At some point the stove is going to start heating up.
