Phillies at the Trade Deadline

I am wondering if the Phil’s know that Eflin’s injury may be a season long problem that will seriously limit his availability but they are keeping it quiet so that they not even more behind the 8 Ball than they already appear to be at the deadline.

I don't think that's a big mystery at this point. It may or may not reach a point where he's able to pitch through it, and then who knows how effective he'll be. But the issue likely isn't gonna go away. At minimum he needs more rest than is optimal now, and/or "clean-up" surgery in the off-season.

The question then becomes does that make them more conservative or more aggressive? Based on their inability to get the Pirates deal done, seems like the former, but we'll see what the last 24 hours bring.

I think the Phillies stand pat. They're in no-man's land, not good enough to buy, not bad enough to sell.

At this point, the Phillies keeping those guys is as mind-boggling as the Cubs keeping Kimbrel and Bryant.

Agreed. But since they won't, I think they're still players in the next 24 1/2 hours.

But it probably won't be terribly exciting.

Cutch is the only guy we have with any real value. Segura is not someone I want to trade even though I worry about him being this good next year. I just don't see the Phillies picking up his salary to buy the prospects anyway.

I wouldn't say that since both Cutch and Segura are controlled next year. Would still be surprising if Cubs don't make a move but they may figure they can trade Kimbrel in the off-season and get the pick for Bryant.

The Cubs are still holding onto their assets as the deadline is now less than 24-hours away. What market is left for:
Herrera, Gregorious, Kintzler, Segura, VV, Moore, Neris, etc. - not much
I'd like to keep Bradley and McCutchen and see them back next year.

This team is not going to win playing Didi and Herrera everyday. They can get by with Bohm and Hoskins shortcomings in the field because they can give you quality at bats. This team is not going to win if Howard, VV and Moore are your 3,4 and 5 man in the rotation.

To improve the team Pineda is still with the Twins, Jon Gray is still with Colorado - their costs has to be coming down now that Scherzer has been traded.
Trevor Story is still out there but will cost a mint
Kris Bryant and Kimbrel are still out there, but will cost a mint
Kennedy is still with Texas and could help the pen

I don't know that 1 or even 2 of those moves put the Phillies ahead of the Mets and Braves this year, though.

If we could roll back the clock to asparagus season I wouldn't mind smelling that again. And we could sign some different pitchers while we're at it.

This was a game mostly lost by Dombrowski. He knew we needed a starter (or three). He failed to complete his one obvious trade and did not have a backup. And team leadership (management, coaches, veteran players) completely failed in getting this team vaccinated taking options like Falter off the board.

I just don't think it is worth investing in this team. And they are too close to just give up, so I am guessing they do next to nothing.

It's 2019 all over again except they won't even do that much probably. Thinking they would exceed the CBT was probably always folly (but it remains folly that they haven't). Middleton's ego stops when it reaches that particular point in his wallet (or MLB ownership's informal collusion).

Don’t think that Dombrowski will make deals to patch together a club just to make this year’s POs. The trades will be made to make the club better going forward.

I don't think he's gonna do much of anything. You can be the Cubs (boldly rebuild/sell) or be the Yankees (crazily go for it) or Padres (less crazily go for it). But we'll see.

Starting pitching market getting thinner:

The Rockies are still fielding interest in their fine pitcher Jon Gray, who’s a free agent after the season. But in something of a surprise, they may end up keeping him and giving him the qualifying offer. An option.

Mets and Cubs are talking about deals for Kris Bryant and/or Zach Davies. Could make a nice package and solve Mets’ two main issues. Cubs have a lot going on obvs.

It certainly seems like the gap between us and the other teams is widening, though it was already supposed to be wide.
