Phillies at the Trade Deadline

I think there are opportunities to get some controllable pieces this week. They would cost, but not necessarily more than in the off-season (i.e. what you might give up for Berrios this week vs. what you might give up for a rental now + Berrios in the off-season).

Also possible, bundling a controllable piece with a high-$ rental.

It's too bad two of the most attractive pieces are on the Nats (they are listening on Turner now, which would have to be a huge offer I'm sure, as well as Scherzer).

Triple A outfielder Greg Deichmann one of two players Cubs are acquiring for left-hander Andrew Chafin, sources tell @TheAthletic . Deichmann, a second-round pick in 2017, is batting .300 with an .881 OPS for Las Vegas.

Deichmann is 26 and his .881 OPS is less impressive given that the Las Vegas team averages .864. The league averages .821

The Andrew Chafin deal is done. He's headed to the A's for outfielder Greg Deichmann and right-hander Daniel Palencia.

Deichman is a high-on-base corner outfielder who's at AAA. Palencia is a 21-year-old whose fastball sits 97-99 and is in A ball.

Phillies were having trouble getting traction on Craig Kimbrel at last check. Richard Rodriguez is a possibility for Philly. Young catcher Rafael Marchan interests the Pirates as @JSalisburyNBCS reported

He looks like he belongs in our bullpen since the sticky stuff crackdown. I wouldn’t touch him in trade talks. You can get a lot better relievers for a lot less in my opinionZ

While I do think Marchan would make a better backup than Knapp because of the defense, I also think he'll never hit enough to be a regular. I would make that trade if Marchan is the biggest piece going to Pittsburgh. Given the extra year of control I imagine we would need to throw in another prospect or two, but hopefully from the bottom end of our top 30.

We probably need to spend a little for another AAAA catching option next year, but our catching depth in O'Hoppe but also Gutierrez and Aparicio and Nava in the lower minors is looking better these days. Defense first catchers can be signed for relatively small amounts for AAA.

He's cheap and we'd have him for 2 1/2 seasons so that's where you pay the premium. But if he's about to regress is that a good thing?

It's really hard to know for sure with a reliever. Obviously the date of the crackdown is an important data point, but a couple of bad games or a change in BABIP luck can also wreck a stat line quick.

See I feel different and it’s not because of Marchan - I agree with your assessment there - Rodriguez stats and metrics have been awful since the sticky stuff crackdown. However, since he’s been good for the past 4 years and has an extra year of control, he’ll be a lot more expensive. I think you are going to overpay for him. I’d rather get someone else.

The Heyman tweet says Phillies like Rodriguez because they haven't been able to get traction on Kimbrel so that either means Rodriguez costs less or they think his youth and contractual control is worth more than the Old Proven Closer.

And Rodriguez doesn't reach free agency until 2024.

I just worry the other side is getting Kimbrel for a package led by Stott and some other top 10 prospect. Stott, Rojas, and Ortiz for instance.

Moving back to the deadline thread, it does seem that the Phillies would have some interest in getting Tyler Anderson along with Rodriguez. Back end LH starter (maybe kind of like Matt Moore but more consistent) making $2.5 million that will be a free agent at the end of the year.
