If Nava get close to returning to form and his defense is as good as they say (with some 1B too!), he could be a great pick-up, But he lacks the pop that the Phils really could use, as they have Altherr and Quinn as options for roaming the outfield. Really hoping Altherr lights up this year...

Who says Nava is good defensively? I've never looked at the numbers, but I've always been under the impression he was "adequate in LF", but has also played in RF, but really didn't have the arm for it.

But what value does Nava have? He won't help us win when we are "competing" and he won't bring prospects to help that future. So (if he were to make the team) he would simply be a waste of a roster spot. If we just put out a team of players that cannot do one of those two things again we are failing to use assets (money) to improve the rebuilding, which is what happened last year. When the trade deadline came we were a "selling" team with nothing to sell. That is a wasted opportunity.

This discussion is using Nava as an example, my guess is that he probably won't make the team and may get stashed in AAA as a reserve. It doesnt really matter what name you use, the logic to me is the same for every player.

All 25 spots should either be players that might help us win in the future OR players that are probable to be good enough to bring back prospects in 2017. Having guys like Parades around wastes the possibility.

A winning team will always have guys at the bottom of the roster to fill out a need, like Taguchi, Bruntlett and Martinez were. They werent great players but they were on the team to provide depth, without which we could have lost games when they were needed. For a rebuilding team the logic should be different because the team shouldnt care if those players not being there cause a problem.

Nava had 1 good season, followed by 3 bad ones, is a switch-hitter who can't hit lefties. If you're going to roll the dice, you might as well grabbed a young player in the Rule 5 Draft.

Geez, it's only mid-December, a handful of free agents have signed, and the Phillies have to wait because agents always shoot for the moon, then when they don't get what they asked for, start serious negotiations.

So if they want to sign someone like Sanders, first they have to wait for him to find out if anyone will give a 3-4 year deal at reasonable money, if not, then he'll listen to 1-2 year offers. So they have to be patient, let the upper tier FAs sign, then once landing spots have evaporated the kind of patches they're looking for will be willing to listen to offers.

Move fast on the guys you really want and are willing to pay, move slow on the guys you don't want to overpay.

Apparently the oft-released David Rollins was DFA'd to create the Blanco roster spot.

Really, really like the Richie Shaffer claim.

The Phillies made room for Blanco and Shaffer by releasing righthander Phil Klein and designating lefthander David Rollins for assignment. Klein will look to play next season in Asia. Rollins was claimed off waivers earlier this month.

I really like the Shafer pickup, former 1st round draft pick who had a decent 2015 in AA/AA, .897 OPS, and he plays both corner IF plus corner OF.

At least on paper, how is Shaffer released/DFA'd? Better than solid numbers, even in his short time in the majors.

Every bench has a 1B/3B type that is supposed to be the primary PH (usually), looks like they have filled that role. Certainly an upgrade over Asche (on paper).

The only problem with Shaffer is that he is yet another RH power bat. Since Franco and Joseph are the starters at the position he plays Shaffer would be a little redundant on the roster.

Their roster next year really needs a left-handed power bat. Somewhere. Anywhere.

Shaffer is a relatively local guy born in Flemington, NJ though it appears he graduated from high school down in Charlotte.

I'm surprised but non unpleased about Blanco. Though he might get a two-year deal somewhere, but obviously both parties wanted to do it, and the Phillies can afford it. And they can always trade him if the middle INF logjam does arise. Of course his return also re-opens the option of trading Hernandez (or eventually, Galvis).

Interestingly, the Rays had 10 (yes ten) "1st Round" picks in 2011 - Goeddel was overall pick #41 that year but was the Rays 5th pick of 10 1st round picks that year. The "1st round" in 2011 consisted of 60 picks. Hard to imagine 1 team having 10 of the 1st 60 picks in any draft!

Giving up a draft pick to sign the 36-year old Bautista would be a totally stupid thing for the Phillies to do. They decided not to try to contend this year, so losing a draft pick to improve this year's non-contender helps us how? Spend the money where it has a chance of helping the future, not where it detracts from the future.

I agree with you on this but let's just talk fantasy for a second....

What kind of package could you get for a guy like Bautista at the deadline and would it have a higher value than a pick? Do you sign him for two years?
