This thread was started to consolidate the many 'So and So has Died' threads that used to popup. One fan's really famous person is another fan's 'Who?'. Always think of my father who is a big sports fan and likes some TV and movies, but stopped listening to new artists when the fedora started going out of style. He might not know much about Bowie.
fixed
To be clear, one of the mods made this thread out of some other thread discussion, didn't start this thread, as I recall, even though I'm credited with starting it. I had posted "I was thinking maybe we need an Unending Thread of Death Notices of Semi-Famous People" during the debate back then.
Monte Irvin, hall of famer.
(Yours truly hit a triple off him in a company softball game, a better story if he was A) a pitcher and B) not in his 60s at the time).
Perhaps call it "Death Notices of the Famous and Semi-Famous"?
Alan Rickman, 69, Cancer. What a horrible week.
I watch Die Hard every single Christmas without fail. Hans Gruber is one of the all time brilliant villains. Brilliant in Galaxy Quest too as well as many others.
I first saw Alan Rickman in Truly, Madly, Deeply at an arthouse festival back in the early nineties, IIRC. The movie had received great reviews locally and they were deserved. Such a recognisable voice and one that will resonate with children (and this adult) for a long time. A sad loss.

And, of course, let's not forget arguably Alan Rickman's most famous role, Professor Snape from the Harry Potter movies. I also remember him as the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Bob Roberts' campaign manager in Bob Roberts and playing real-life historical figures such as Eammon De Valera in Michael Collins and Ronald Reagan in The Butler.
David Margulies, 'Ghostbusters' actor and Broadway star, dies at 78
Dan Haggarty, star of the 70's TV show The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams, passed away at 74.
I loved that show when I was a kid.
me too, childhood memories
Former Colts and Ravens head coach, and former Eagles assistant coach Ted Marchibroda passed away today. He was 84.
Jim Simpson, one of the first name broadcasters that ESPN signed, died a few days ago. Was also a local DC sportscaster for a number of years.

1984 Mens Olympic Downhiller Gold Medalist Bill Johnson (US). Had his best run on the biggest of stages. I recall Anthony Edwards playing him in a made for tv movie.Video of the Gold Medal Run
He was a Schuylkill County legend and was idolized at my high school (I only spent my 4 years of high school in Schuylkill County but have great memories) for making the majors and pitching in the World Series. I never realized he was the Black Friday game winner. I was at his bar/restaurant a number of times. Real nice guy and 63 is too young!

I remember that. Apparently, he had a pretty checkered life after that. Unfortunate story. Only 55. usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2016/01/22/former-olympic-downhill-champ-bill-johnson-dies-at-age-of-55/79158894/
Yeah, I remember those barber pole uniforms that skiers wore back then! For a couple years after, all the trendy skiers hit the slopes with them.
