Former major league reliever Ryne Duren dies at 81

I remember Ryne Duren as a Philly. He did indeed strike terror in the opposing batters, especially the first one he faced after entering from the bullpen. He had those bottle bottom lenses in his glasses, and one wondered whether he could see a thing. Almost invariably he would throw at least one warmup pitch well over the catcher's head to the backstop- and he could really power that ball. They didn't have pitch speed posted on the manually operated scoreboard at Shibe Park-Connie Mack Stadium, but it must have been close to 100 mph. Was not aware of his drinking problem, but probably the players were, and that would only have added to their fear of stepping into the batter's box against him.

Dick Winters of Band of Brothers Fame passes away

My Grandfather knew him fairly well a long time ago, they were amongst a group of WW2 vets that met for coffee and to tell lies a couple times a week. Hard to believe that most of that generation is gone now, I think I saw that there were now less than 2000 WW2 vets alive in the US.

The word "Hero" is overused in our society and in some inappropriate places (such as sports), in the case of this man I think it truly applies. The men who served under him seem pretty adamant that he was deserving.

'Ozzie and Harriet' Star David Nelson Dies

Last of the family from the TV show that aired 1952-1966.

As I recall, Ozzie was a pretty decent college football player before his band leader days. Harriett was the band singer. Ricky went on to do pretty well in the rock record world before his death in a plane accident.

Wow, did not realize it was that long ago. I remember sitting in my 6th grade class and the teacher brought in a TV that was broadcasting the aftermath. Such a sad turn of events, given the circumstances behind the mission(school teacher wins a chance to go into space).

Wow, I was in 4th grade and remember hearing rumors in school that the shuttle blew up, and getting home and having it confirmed by my mother. I couldn't fathom how such an accident could occur.

John Barry, who wrote the music for the James Bond movies from Dr No thru the Timothy Dalton era, with some exceptions.

He turned a lame Norman Monty riff into the "James Bond" theme but was unable to get the writer credit.
