Ah yes, Barney Miller. Who could forget that show's theme song which began with its distinctive bass "riff" and became a staple on smooth jazz radio stations for years.

Dave Mirra, BMX champ and X-Games star dies of apparent suicide, he was 41. I'm not a big X-Games fan, but I saw what this guy could do on a bike and it was incredible.

This is a shocker. There has been a lot of speculation as to who would be first to leave the bench and Scalia really wasn't mentioned. Of course, as a conservative he wasn't a retirement possibility during Obama's term.

Scalia was confirmed by the Senate by a 98-0 vote. Any chance that the President appoints a replacement that gets unanimous approval?

I'd venture that the Rs will not confirm anyone in the next ten months. More if the Dems win the election. It's probably going to be a big part of the Pres. election campaigns.

This should all probably go to the politics thread, but Mitch McConnell has already said they will not confirm anyone Obama nominates, which doesn't seem like 'advise and consent' or a very strict interpretation of the Constitution, but that stuff doesn't matter if it means the Republicans have to concede something.

Tony Phillips was one of those guys that was easy to like even if he wasn't on your favorite team. And shame that Harper Lee had that book come out last year against what always used to be said to be her wishes up until near the end.

One of my favorite authors, Pat Controy.

Some critics found him long-winded and purplish. “Inflation is the order of the day,” Richard Eder wrote of “The Prince of Tides” in The Los Angeles Times. “The characters do too much, feel too much, suffer too much, eat too much, signify too much and above all talk too much.”

But, I enjoyed them. I found he painted a colorful, albeit verbose, novel that I found myself lost in more often than not. He was able to make the English language do what he wanted it to do like few other authors I have read.
