Gene Pitney. Now that is my young childhood. When I was like 8 or 9 I saw the movie Town Without Pity with Kirk Douglas (early 60's) that he sung the title song for and loved the song. Did not understand a thing about the movie. When I grew up saw it again and realized it was about a German girl who was gang raped by an American soldiers and how the town and the legal system treated her. Strangely, this movie has made me less concerned about whether young kids see movies/tv about sex, because they likely don't understand it any better than I did this movie. Still one of my favorite songs. He had a great voice. And it was a mostly shunned movie for dealing with a subject that wasn't talked about in those days.

I often listen to 50s on 5 on XM radio. I've heard Gene Pitney with both Town Without Pity and (The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance. I also remember the movie Liberty Valance (James Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Marvin) which did not use the song in its sound track. Evidently director John Ford did not like the song even though it was written for the movie. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and recorded by Pitney. I remember liking the song before I saw the movie.

I was a big JW fan and saw him at least 4 times in Philly. His style and voice wasn't for everyone, but he should be remembered as one of the best Blues guitarists ever.

Linda Ronstadt was given a National Medal of Arts by President Obama today for her contribution to the arts and humanities. She is severely disabled by Parkinson's Disease; can no longer sing and barely can walk. From her days with the Stone Ponies through her solo career, she was a fantastic performer. I realize that she is still with us but, none the less at this point, a disease has taken a great talent from us.

My wife told me just a few minutes ago. Terrible news. I know comedy is a matter of taste, but, in my mind, he's the best. I have lost so much sleep staying up late watching him on youtube. From Mork, Garp, his interviews with Michael Parkinson through to his most recent standup work, Robin Williams created an enormous body of work that will stand the test of time.

My favorite Robin Williams memory was watching Good Mornng Vietnam in a Paris movie theater, English with French subtitles. I was laughing almost uncontrollably while the movie theater was mostly quiet. The subtitles just couldn't keep up or get the nuance of his humor. RIP
