My favorite Robin Williams memory was watching Good Mornng Vietnam in a Paris movie theater, English with French subtitles. I was laughing almost uncontrollably while the movie theater was mostly quiet. The subtitles just couldn't keep up or get the nuance of his humor. RIP

What a horrible piece of news. And an awful legacy to leave behind, after all the success he has had battling depression. At 63, why be in a rush to meet death? It's coming soon enough. His wife said "don't dwell on his passing, think of the wonderful things he has done." I guess that works for me, but I can't help being very sad.

I loved his off-beat stuff, even the stuff that got bad reviews. My granddaughters watch RV at least once a year. And I sneak in and watch with them.

RIP, my sympathies to his family.

I think with the news of most celebrity's deaths our reactions are "wow, so sad". But it's just news. Something to share with other people. With RW's death I truly feel like I've been punched in the gut. True mourning.

The news was as stunning to my 25-year old son as it was to me. Williams' career began when I was in college, and my son grew up with his routines, movies and roles. A man who spanned the arc of both our lives. This is one of those celebrity deaths that get a whole lot of folks contemplating their own mortality.

It is interesting how many major comedians (alive and deceased) deal or dealt with severe depression and addiction issues. There was a documentary on that. It was really stunning to me how many a comic genius had a personal life that was glutted with serious personal problems.

IMO the genius of many comics' comes from dark, painful places. It's not too surprising then to realize they are tortured souls.

True, going back to the days of Mark Twain who's happy-go-lucky writings belied a life marked by much pain. Speaking of Mark Twain, I got to imagine that Robin should be a shoe-in for next year's Mark Twain Award.

As for his death hitting so hard to so many, I guess he was just so likeable and his manner of death is so seemingly incomprehensible. Accidents happen. Natural causes happen. Sickness happens. Fatal heart attacks in the prime of life happen. Heck, violent crime happens. But, he seemed like one of the last people who would commit suicide.

From what I have heard about Robin Williams, sounds like he is bi-polar. A lot of brilliant people are bi-polar, when they are in a manic state they are capable of genius as well as going non-stop without sleep. Of course that's why it's called bi-polar, because along with the manic highs are the severe depressive states. Almost every bi-polar person uses cocaine, as it's a form of self-medication. They also can be highly functional for many years, without people having a clue about their mental illness, even themselves.
