Undoubtedly, Nelson Mandela was a tremendous human being of enormous stature. His greatest achievement was forgiving those responsible not only for his incarceration, but for incarcerating, torturing and killing many of his fellow South Africans. This contributed significantly to the relatively peaceful dismantling of the apartheid regime at a time when many feared the country would collapse into civil war.

Jerry Coleman, long time broadcaster for the San Diego Padres and 2005 Ford Frick award winner, passes away, age 89

Coleman was one of the memorable players turned announcers from that era, including Whitey, Joe Garagiola, Ralph Kiner, and Tony Kubek. Most of them are retired on passed away. The last one of that ilk (who is slightly younger) may be Bob Uecker.

Colman had one of the funniest unintentional lines in baseball history:

"(Dave) Winfield goes back to the wall, he hits his head on the wall and it rolls off! It's rolling all the way back to second base. This is a terrible thing for the Padres."

Sad.

I will be the first to say I really didn't like his opinions. I almost always disagreed with him and his personality (at least my impression of his public personality) was not favorable. But he was one of the best known sports writers, and certainly in Philadelphia. Few will ever be a successful at it as he was. Didn't like his opinions, but he is certainly worthy of respect and (begrudding) admiration.

RIP. Join Ashburn and Kalas and make a very knowledgeable group of baseball nuts.

Not much respect or admiration left for him in Philly (or anywhere) after 8 people accused him of statutory rape & child molestation. TBH, I don't recall how ironclad the stories were (charges could not be pressed because it was so long ago), but he made no effort to dispute them, just immediately retired, and disappeared.

The work was the work, he was good at his job for a long time, and then not so much.
