Basil Plumley. This guy was a true hero, well known for 'We Were Soldiers'. He fought in the Korean War, but it was his role in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley in Vietnam that brought him the most fame. The battle was chronicled in the book "We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young," which was later a 2002 movie starring Mel Gibson. Sam Elliott played Plumley.

An underrated player in my opinion. 85th all time in career OBP at .394, but that list is dominated by turn of the century (both of them) guys and guys form the 1930s. I took a quick look, and I might have missed some, but it seems to me that of players active in 1956 (I picked the year Yost was 30), he is 8th in career OBP:

1. Ted Williams
2. Mickey Mantle
3. Stan Musial
4. Jackie Robinson
5. ???
6. Whitey
7. Johnny Pesky

You could have given me 100 guesses and I wouldn't have come up with Joe Cunningham as #5 on that list.

I voted for George McGovern for President.

I was 18, and knew little about policy, really - domestic or international. McGovern was the anti-Nixon - a decent man. Nixon's deceit, and overwhelmingly the fact that after four years, we were still mired in Vietnam, determined who I voted for.

With hindsight, education, experience... it would have been a very tough call.

I was 18, and knew little about policy, really - domestic or international. McGovern was the anti-Nixon - a decent man. Nixon's deceit, and overwhelmingly the fact that after four years, we were still mired in Vietnam, determined who I voted for.

With hindsight, education, experience... it would have been a very tough call.

I campaigned and voted for McGovern. My wife was an alternate delegate at that year's Dem convention (actually pretty boring). I met McGovern twice. Once when he came to Allentown to campaign and many years later on a commuter flight. He seemed to have gotten well on with his life after his defeat and was a small businessman at the time. Still quite liberal, although not as much as he had been, and more pragmatic/practical on economics. He always struck me as a good soul. My first political activity was campaigning for Gene McCarthy, who shared many political views with McGovern, but really showed his petulant, spoiled brat side when he lost the primary to HHH. Just picked up his marbles and went home, despite being a serving Senator.

In a way he shaped some of my political thought process'. I was 8 when he lost to Nixon and it's the first political contest I remember. My dad hated him. My mom was thinking of voting for him. Interesting times.

My Mom is one of the few people I remember voting for McGovern. Of course her maiden name was McGovern, so that probably helped.

I don't know about that. He'd be fairly far to the left of Blanche Lincoln, who opposed the Obamacare bill, which was quite similar to the plan which Nixon administration proposed. Imagine the cries of socialism that would rise up today if a Dem President did wage controls, as Nixon did, or opened relations with Cuba, as Nixon did with China, or started the EPA. Take away gay marriage and Nixon fits squarely in Dem Congressional mainstream today, more conservative in some areas, shockingly to the left in others.

Nixon was a conservative during his political career and would be labeled as such today. So would the men who served for and around him and later Ronald Reagan such as James A. Baker, Casper Weinberger, George Schultz and others. Today's "conservative" is more of a reactionary than anything else.

Wage controls certainly would not have been viewed as conservative, but there is a very long conservative tradition of protecting the environment, which today's conservatives have abandoned.

I agree, but the EPA has turned into a bunch of bureaucrat-dictators. I , as a conservative, agree in principle with the idea that the EPA was supposed to be about, but it is far from that now. Sorry this has gotten a little OT for the thread.

I know the last several posts are because of the Senator's death, but in my opinion, out of respect, this thread is best left to thoughtful remembrances and condolences. Just my opinion of course.
