Armstrong was the face of the space program and gets and accepts the recognition for all the accomplishments of the team that put him on the moon.

I kinda think he would have felt that way too.

I see what you're saying, but Shepard, or John Glenn are more of a face of the space program to me. Maybe it's because I was still in elementary school when those guys had their missions and I was out and working when Armstrong had his. Please don't take my post as a diminution of the significance of Armstrong's accomplishment.

I think the reason Neil Armstrong is considered a hero is because he took the greatest personal risk on the moon mission, or at least he was the first to do it (Buzz Aldrin took the same risk, of course). There are undoubtedly numerous scientists and engineers who contributed as much and probably more to the moon missions. But they did not incur much, if any, personal risk. Somebody had to take that risk, and Neil Armstrong was the first to do it.

A lot of talk about how Armstrong always credited the work of the entire team and even felt guilty about the adulation he received for the work of everyone involved.
