Johnny Pesky, a member of the Red Sox organization as a player, manager, coach and instruction since the 1940s, died Monday at the age of 92.

The book The Teammates is a great read. The Red Sox have so much baeball history in their franchise and I am excited to bring my children to Fenway Park once they are old enough to appreciate the stadium.

Many people refer to this time as "the space age". IMHO the single greatest accomplishment of the last half of the 20th Century was expanding the boundary of what we are capable of, he was the front man.

I think I understand the prevailing sentiment, but I have always wondered why the astronaut is the hero and not the scientists who calculated and formulated until they figured out how to build and fly something that could land on the moon. I get the rigorous training for space travel and all that, but it seems to me that the brains behind it are at least as heroic as the guy who was fortunate enough to draw the assignment to fly the thing.

I'm not debating it. kalasfan wanted to know why people think of the Astronaut as the hero and not the guy who's brains put him there. Society is VERY strange and there are countless things that make me go "hmmm" about society. It just continues decade after decade.

Well, no,that isn't what I tried to say. I just wondered if the ones with the vision and imagination to figure out how to do it aren't equally as heroic as the astronaut, in the scheme of things. I mean, we gave credit to Alan Shepard for riding straight up in a space ship and straight back down into the ocean. I guess since it was a risk to hope nothing went wrong, but didn't a team of scientists have to make sure everything worked right? I didn't say the moon walk was any less important, but it's kind of like an unassisted triple play. Yeah,the guy paid his dues to get to the point of being on the field but it's kind of an alignment of circumstances to get the ball hit at him with runners on the necessary bases for him to catch the ball and get them out.
