Phormer Phil Nick Pivetta got roughed up by the Royals for 6 R on 9 hits including 3 HR, but phormer Phil Yacksel Rios picked up the W in the 7-6 Red Sox win:

Nick Pivetta's early success this season may have been from the Red Sox use of sticky stuff.

The spinrate of his knuckle curve was about 175 RPM less than his season average. Fastball down about 80 and slider 109.

Name to remember as another potential example of Phillies unique mix of incompetence and bad luck in identifying and developing young players, Australian Curtis Mead - whom the Phillies traded for LHP Cristopher Sanchez - is putting up gaudy numbers (at Single-A) in the Rays organization. From today's Baseball America Prospect Report:

Curtis Mead, Low-A Charleston (Rays) — Mead, whom the Rays acquired from the Phillies in the 2019 offseason, has been a smashing success in Chucktown. On Thursday, he went 4-for-5 against Kannapolis with his 20th double of the season and his fifth and sixth home runs of the year. His .350 average is second only to the since-promoted Jordan Westburg in the Low-A East League.

There's a quote in that Athletic story I posted in the non-Phils thread, from former Phillie Aaron Loup no less, that basically says, "if the Rays want your guy, you should probably keep him." Luckily that hasn't been the case more recently (Garcia, Grullón though he's still there). And we knew what we were getting in Alvarado (and our player didn't go to Tampa in that deal though you could probably say the same about the Dodgers).

This year he has a AAA OPS of 508 with the Mets. And 1026 with the Rays. It is magic.

Can't discount the impact of Rays coaches, but might have just been mental from all the bouncing around, and from bearing down to try and earn his spot back (while knowing he can't be called up). We know he's a good AAA hitter already.

Sorry to hear this. You hate to see a guy’s career fall into jeopardy. However there were some that predicted that a thing like this would happen. Over the long haul,SS didn’t have the physical frame to support the velocity that he was dealing. Wish him well with his recovery.
