That Hurts extension has hamstrung the franchise. The guy is an average QB at best.

Somehow they survived Wentz (such as it is). The more pressing/immediate issue, if things are as bad as they seem like they might be, is are you looking to find Hurts a new coach or find Siranni a new QB, or neither? (And if neither, what about the GM?)

None of those guys play defense. Playing what looked like a prevent defense for most of the first half and just watching them complete 6-10 yard passes over and over. I don’t think Hurts can help that.

We have no WR, so we come out throwing on the first two series. A little hard to blame Hurts for that.

I think the problem here was once again no defensive pressure, an offensive game plan that made no sense when you have your #5-9 WR. Barkley should have been carrying until he was too tired to get off the field. Instead, he watched the team get down 21 before he had his 3rd carry.

If we had run the ball their defense would have 5 guys in the blue tent with heat related issues, instead of ours.

Yes, indeed Huff was credited with his first solo tackle in his 4th game. Still no QB pressures (hard to get them when you are pancaked).

There is NO reason to have him active in the next game. There is no chance he is a top 48 player on this team.

Carter returned to his usual sleep walking through the game.

Fangio’s defense would have been great 2 years ago with the DL that got 70 sacks. This DL is terrible, and his defense is DEPENDENT on them playing well. They just don’t have the players they need on the DL. Tango is too old to figure out that it is not an All Pro game and you are allowed to blitz.

Huff has been bad. It's hard to sack a QB when you play prevent D, the other team is running well, and the receivers are wide open so the QB can get the ball away fast. Another bad game for Hurts, who just doesn't protect the ball well and takes too long to throw (even if it throwing the ball away). He had a patchwork OL for much of today and didn't adjust.

The defensive game plan for Tampa was not good...we showed what we could do vs New Orleans, we had to know TB would adjust, we had to change up coverage after the first drive, anyway, since TB had obviously game-planned to minimize QB release time. Had to play some press man to slow down the QB releases, which we didn't do until the second half. Also would have helped if we had tackled receivers. Just a real shitshow on the defensive side for an entire half, and the offense was stalled then, too.

I wouldn't mind Siriani being shown the door--I think he accentuates the losing because he just doesn't handle adversity well himself. Affects the players' reactions, too.

I agree - i'm not impressed with Siriani. I am shocked that he wasn't fired after last season's collapse and it doesn't seem like he has improved whatever it was that lead to the losing. He was a great leader when everything went well, but you find out what kind of leader you have when things are not going well. That's where you earn the paycheck.

Docs, I think you nailed it. Smooth sailing and Siriani is fine, but he's not a good leader through the rough waters. Lurie has to figure out whether or not things are bad enough to make a change now, which I personally think they are. Lurie is so invested in his process, though, I doubt he will violate his "don't fire guys midseason" principle. It was awful last time when they brought in Matt Patricia...

I'm not a huge Belichick fan, but if you want to win a superbowl this year and he would step in right now, I wouldn't be opposed--he might be the best option. If that is not in the cards, I would be fine with promoting Moore, too.

Marcus Hayes isn't throwing that bomb yet.

It's probably a lost season either way. Just a question of whether it's really bad, or competitive but not Super Bowl caliber.

The personality of the coach affects the demeanor and play of the team. When the coach is a raving maniac at times on the sidelines, the team is going to lose its focus.

What we showed against New Orleans has nothing to do with what we did for Tampa. New Orleans (and Atlanta) are run heavy offenses that deploy lots of 12 (and even 13) personnel and allowed Fangio to go with what was basically a 6 man front for the NO game.

Tampa is pretty much exclusively 11 personnel - you have to be able to generate some (even a little) pressure with your front 4 to play press coverage and take away what you saw yesterday. They are not able to do that and Fangio knows it - that is why the shell yesterday and hoping that Mayfield would make a mistake - he didn't.

Two reasons for that.

Our DEs are terrible - leaving BG out of this because he is not, but he can't do it on his own. Sweat got singled the entire game yesterday. Huff - no further comment needed. And your boy, Smith - again, today heard Cosell say he has shown ZERO this year. Who knows, maybe it's Baldy and you that are in the exclusive Nolan Smith, Jr. fan club.

Interior pressure pretty much has to come from Carter. Davis isn't that player and Milton Williams is NOT an interior pass rusher. Carter saw double teams all day yesterday after his NO performance - expect that to continue until we get a threat on the edge (2025???). AND the conditions yesterday pretty much dictated that he would be worthless after the 1st quarter. He played a zillion snaps yesterday in "real-feel" 108 degrees yesterday.

Let me go back to my "too soon" week 1 observations:
* Maddox and CJGJ are cooked - need DeJean and Brown up to speed ASAP
* Nolan Smith (and the rest of the DE crew excluding BG) can't play - need Jalyx Hunt to speed his developmental timeline up 10x because he's our only hope of fixing this this year - not that this is a proper expectation, it's basically a hail mary.
* QMitchell can play. Dean can/t cover, but he can make some flash plays

Can't remember if I had any others, but we're 4 weeks in and I stand by all of them.

Oh yeah, my other observation was Gainwell can't play despite the 10 yard catch and run week 1. Well, 3 weeks later he's still getting way too many reps and I haven't seen him gain more than a couple of yards any time he's touched the ball and that probably includes kick returns. But they love him for some reason. 2 minute offense and he's on the field and the best offensive player in the game is on the bench.

There is no reason you can't play heavy fronts and 4-3 under type setups versus 11 personnel. You can also fire through the gaps rather than 2-gap, which the Eagles are doing most of the time. Lots of teams put 7 in the box versus 11; we need to do that more and we need to play more press coverage. If you can't get to the QB with 4 guys, you have to send 5 or zone blitz or shoot gaps. In this league even the bad QBs will thrive without pressure.

Lots of the reporters said the Eagles weren't prepared for the heat, and looked tired even before the kickoff. That is disturbing if true.

If you play 4-3 under, blitz AND play press coverage like you just suggested against 11 personnel, you are an explosive play (on offense) waiting to happen. This is NOT going to happen with Fangio, or Sirianni, or most coaches in the NFL today.

This isn't a scheme issue for the Eagles, it's a personnel issue on defense.

People can get on Hurts and the offense all they want this week, but they are missing the boat. Yeah, we could have gotten Saquon involved earlier - that was a mistake - but still, missing our best lineman, our #1 and #2 receivers and playing with basically your #4 through #7 receivers (we don't have a 3 - Dotson isn't it) it was always going to be a rough go this week. It's not like New Orleans - Tampa had a week to prepare for Barkley and Goedert being the only threats on offense.

This team's undoing is going to be the defense. We have some serious personnel issues on that side of the ball.

Good points, but I'm not suggesting you go 4-3 under or press all the time or together--but, if you're playing 2-man and 3-man shells on every play and are 10 yards off the receivers the quick throws will always be open. The first three TB possessions were as easy as could possibly be for a pro offense--and that was scheme, not personnel.

Yes, but the personnel is causing the scheme. The lack of rush is putting Fangio in a dilemma - play shell and make the opposition execute, or gamble and risk huge chunk plays. The philosophy of Fangio, Sirianni, AND a lot of others in the NFL today is to pick the former. I'm not sure I blame them when currently we only have two guys playing OK at best at the back end. And CJGJ is certainly not - nor ever has been - an eraser type guy. He's already a gambler out there.

It certainly doesn't help that we have limited coverage ability from our LBs who could shore up the vulnerable areas of the shell coverage.
