From a contrarian perspective on Singleton, PFF had Singleton ranked 44th out of the 87 starting LBs last year, so dead median. TJ Edwards was ranked 10th overall. Singleton was best rated for his run support -- ranked 10th overall behind TJ (8th) and Bobby Wagner (7th). Singleton's PR was also rated above average. Where he got absolutely torched was on coverage where he was rated around bottom 15%.
If I accept the general wisdom of the Eagle's defense this season, that the keep the ball in front of you was poorly strategized and implemented, I might expect the LB who played the most passing downs to look pretty bad statistically. Nonetheless, overall he still rated better than names like Anthony Hitchens in KC, Isaiah Simmons, D'onta Hightower and Roquan Smith.
Nonetheless, I do think I would tender Singleton $2.5M to have kept an average starter for another year. My guess is Howie feels he needs to get Bradley\Johnson\Taylor's athleticism an opportunity to evidence itself, and probably also believes he may add a difference making LB early in the draft. Maybe bring back Jordan Hicks if he doesn't?
