New Orleans feels like a really bad matchup but you can't win if you aren't in the game and the Eagles are in the game.

Agreed. Saints are going to be a much harder opponent to defend against then the Bears were. I thought the Eagles could beat the Bears. I don't think the Eagles can beat the Saints.

This whole Foles/Wentz thing is going to be a large topic of discussion this offseason. Up until today, I was on the Wentz bandwagon - he's younger, more upside, more dynamic, and the Eagles spent a lot of draft capital to get him. Now? I'm not sure there is a wrong answer here - I think Eagles would be in a great position in keeping either one going forward. But, the more I think about it and look at the stats, the more I lean towards keeping Foles.

Throwing out his time under Jeff Fisher, he's 22-11 as a starter (4-1 in playoffs) with 61 touchdowns to 23 interceptions (10 TDs and 3 INTs in playoffs). He's clearly got the confidence of his coaches and teammates. He's playoff tested, beating two very good defenses (Minnesota and Chicago) along the way. He's older then Wentz, but still under 30 when QBs are playing at high levels into their late 30's/early 40's. He doesn't have the injury history that Wentz does.

I just don't think there's a wrong answer.

I think Wentz is the future. But another element that one has to consider is what type of return could one expect to get by trading one of them? I agree with you that it wasn't even debatable until recently. Now? There at least needs to be a conversation.

Wentz would be easier to trade, I think. Foles may be harder, given that teams may feel they will release him if they don't trade him, so why trade for Foles if they can sign him as a free agent.

Foles' contract situation makes him very difficult to trade. Wentz is still on his rookie deal, which increases his already insane value. You might be able to get all 3 #1 picks from Oakland plus something else for him. That being said, I'd rather keep him and roll the dice with him and whatever his perceived difficulties are. He'll be healthier next season, and I expect him to rebound to 2017 levels.

You're only trading Foles for negotiating rights, essentially. That said, maybe he won't buy out the option. Can the Eagles keep him as a second QB at that salary? Could they extend/renegotiate again? Would be ideal to find a way before deciding to extend Wentz, but presumably very difficult.

The Herschel Walker scenario for Wentz is certainly interesting. Would be crazy to trade him but to say that he'll be healthier next season seems counter to the evidence.

I think the feeling is it would be hard to trade him, but not impossible. He's either being traded tied to a 1 year $20MM contract, or he bought himself out but they slapped a franchise tag on him.

I'm not sure there's a wrong answer - I could get behind the Eagles moving one and keeping the other. I'm just not sure which answer is more right.

My understanding is that if the Eagles pick up the option for 2019, Foles can buy himself out of that option for $2m cash (paid back to the Eagles). I think he would certainly do that given that he is looking at probably 60+ million in the open market as an UFA.. The Eagles (I think) could franchise him and try to trade him but then you'd be talking about a $30M cap hit (or hold). Its also possible that I'm wrong about all of this.

Apparently upon review it was determined that DT Devon Hester got his hand on the kick. Couldnt see it so it must have been just a finger tip, but the ball did travel somewhat "oddly". Apparently he got JUST enough of it.

There is no way you keep Foles over Wentz.

A) He actually had a bad game against the Bears. He is obviuosly hurt, he through some odd "lob" passes at times that really hurt us, 1 was picked and some other guys were wide open and had to wait on the ball. He had trouble throwing the ball hard obviously, he did it at times but he was not accurate at all.

Not busting on Foles, he is hurt and doing what he can. We won and he made just enough plays to make that happen against the #1 defense.

There is no way Foles is better than Wentz, Everyone seems to forget Wentz was on his way to an MVP last year, this year was a recovery year for him, he played well, but not great. He didnt have the supporting cast he once had and he really couldnt run and the defenses knew it.

Foles is the best backup in the league right now, no one is close, and sadly next year he will probably be the starter for some terrible team. But here is a bad, bad scenario.... Tom Brady finally says that is enough (or NE says that is enough) and they sign Foles to get them to their next franchise QB that they draft. That would be ugly. Foles in a Giants jersey would be hard to watch also, both of those are somewhat possible.

Just to be clear, I am very much Team Wentz going forward. I just don't think there is any way we get anything for Foles this offseason (other than a 2020 comp pick related to the contract he signs).

Keep in mind they are also going to be trying to work on deal for Wentz as he is "signable" as of this offseason and there is NO CHANCE you let him get even a sniff of an open market. New England would be waiting with open arms and every dollar they could muster in 2 years if Wentz was a FA, we dont want him to even think about that possiblity, you sign him long term now and make it clear the intention.

Sadly, I think Foles is a product of the small number of set plays that Doug Pederson has figured out he can be successful in. I dont see him doing well without Pederson unless some other coach does the exact same thing.

I don't disagree at all with anything said by @Squire or @bkeich as I'm more for Wentz then Foles. I'm just saying that Foles, to me, is more then a backup QB. 22-11 is essentially a 2 year period. That's essentially 11-5 two years straight. That's pretty good. Throw in a 3:1 TD/INT ratio and that's very good.

Yeah, you can say he's a system QB, but I can also say that most QBs are system QBs in the broad sense that smart coaches design their playbook to the skills and strengths of their personnel.

Yes, I'm playing devli's advocate. I'm enjoying the ride this year, but this is a really, really fun and interesting debate. And, hey, beats deciding Detmer/Hoying, right?

I think his level of play for us is much more than a typical backup QB, but I think you agree Wentz is our starter. Wentz will make big bucks. Do you really think we can build a team with big bucks going to 2 QB’s?

again, philsmania,i think the era ends on Sunday. The saints know they can beat the eagles, it just won't be as much as the last time. i can almost guarantee that the eagles will score more than 7, though.
