Miller is hurt. Crochet is a starter. But Estevez is certainly in play.

Crochet seems like a bad idea , if not because of his innings then because of his desire to be extended. I mean we could extend him and I guess it might drive down the trade price. But he could easily be Lorenzen 2.0 this year.

Probably be someone we haven't thought of.

The whole idea of extending Crochet is that teams are worried about his innings limit. Crochet wants to start and is perfectly willing to extend his innings if he gets paid for doing that. Natural desire on his part to seek some protection if he takes a career risk.

We just got a better RH hitting OF than Pham. Hays has not hit right-handed pitching these year but has been OK in the past and is better defensively than Pham.

You could do that - it is just he would be priced like a starter with 2 more years of control and you'd use him as a reliever this year. There is really no reason at the moment to add a starter for next year at a high cost. Better use fewer prospects to just get a reliever like Finnegan or Estevez.

Yeah but Crochet also said he's willing to move to the bullpen for the playoffs if he gets his extension.

But why would anyone extend him before trading for him if he has 2 more years of control left? Maybe in the offseason, but seems a bit expensive when there is still not much track record of him starting (and pitching consistent innings over the next 2+ years). The issue is not what the player wants, it is what is best for the Phillies.

It is more nuance than just disgruntled. Crochet had only pitched 217 total innings in the 6 years prior to this season. He was a bulk innings guy the first 2 years in college (average 3-4 innings per outing) then lost his junior year to the pandemic. Then got fast tracked to the majors as a reliever. Then TJ surgery and Chicago not wanting to tempt fate in his recovery by reintroducing him to starting.

It is a weird profile. I think he'd be fine relieving the rest of the way and starting next year. Most teams would shut him down as a starter because of the innings. He is saying he'll roll the dice with his future to win today but wants to get paid to take that risk. And he probably will cost more than any of the relievers on the market. It is more admirable stand from the player than disgruntled.

Trade news: The Seattle Mariners are acquiring right-handed reliever Yimi Garcia from the Toronto Blue Jays, sources tell ESPN.

The main return for the Blue Jays: outfield prospect Jonatan Clase.

Garcia was one of the best RP available this deadline. Seattle remaining busy.

So I still think we might get a Starting Pitcher.

We have 4 (Wheeler, Nola, Sanchez and Suarez). I still contend we need one more because MOST LIKELY one of them will not be available at the end of the season. Nola has been marginal, Suarez and Sanchez may not be good enough by the end of the season, both have come back to earth in the last 6-8 weeks. Both will be WAY over their career highs in innings by the playoffs.

Turnbull and Walker are probable just possible long relievers in the playoffs.

I mean, I'm not saying it isn't admirable but if he's traded to a team that doesn't want to give him an extension or work with him on his usage (as his agent also did with Hader) he will potentially be disgruntled.

But I also think that creates a Moneyball opportunity if other teams are scared away, and the Sox have trouble getting what they want.

Moneyball could easily say that Crochet's biggest value is as an offseason trade piece. He proves he can throw 150 innings this year finishing out in the bullpen after a couple more starts. Then trade him as someone who can throw 180 quality innings for 2 years of control (and no contract extension to worry about since he'll be arbitration eligible).

That seems more sane than risking $30+ million for a 2-year extension now as you roll the dice and use him as a starter the rest of the way. Someone could easily be insane of course. It is just not likely to be the Phillies.
