Good TDL moves, add solid pitching depth, Lorenzo has been both a starter and a setup man, so he can be a 6th starter, insurance against injury or Sanchez slipping, and provide BP depth for the playoffs. Lee is a solid prospect, but nothing special, I think Simmons emerging (who has more upside) made him expendable. And of course, Bergolla seems to be on a fast track.

Falter is no loss, at 26 he took a big step backward, with 2 top pitching prospects and Sanchez emerging, he's an afterthought in the organization. Castro gives them a potential RH bat who should be better than Harrison.

I don't understand -- why would Cleveland trade for a player they planned to release?

It was the cost for them to also get Kahlil Watson. So they eat the cost of Segura's contract to get a 20yo former top 25 prospect.

Dave Dombrowski says Phillies believe Johan Rojas has star potential, and despite teams asking about him, he wasn't someone they considered moving to acquire a veteran.

Sounds like maybe teams with OFs the Phillies wanted kept asking for Rojas rather than Muzziotti or a couple of lower prospects

Also: Hoskins is definitely on the team as one of the two September additions

I am overall satisfied with DD at the deadline.

It really is up to the veteran core to fire up the offense for a strong finish.

Thanks @zambonir and @bkox for the explanations about the Segura trade. I feel bad for Segura. I liked him and always hoped he would hit .300 with the Phils. He really fell off a cliff this year.

I would not be surprised if Segura catches on with someone but in any event, he is owed a ton of money. At least in my thinking, it is a very nice amount.

I feel awful for him. I was a big fan of Jean's and my kids loved him....even though it doesn't make sense in the face of the Falter trade, I almost wish the Phils could scoop him for this run here as a utility player.

A real shame. Miami was a good situation for him, but when you don't produce....

Any new team that scoops him wouldn't be required to pay off that contract or no?

yup new team only had to pay him major league minimum (though I don't know that he will even get a major league deal. certainly he'd be better off with a team that wants him at 2B but he's not really good enough at SS or 3B even off the bench).

He's just old is all. 33. We're watching our 29-31 year-olds struggle! Pretty surprising Marlins gave him a second year (as dumb as when we gave one to Didi, but a lot less $).

That's a good point. I feel sorry for him, AND he's 33 and has already earned $85m. He might lack for purpose after his baseball career is over, but he is (or could/should be) insanely wealthy by most people's standards.

And to be more specific about the $, Bell is on a two-year $33 million deal guaranteed. Segura just has the prorated $8.5 million and the $2 million buyout. So Indians saving a ton of $.

It is not unlike the Phillies' original Segura trade in some ways. He had value (and youth) then but the Phillies wouldn't have given up Crawford if they didn't also need to shed Santana's salary.

I would certainly add Segura on a league minimum contract at the expense of Sosa, but not sure that will happen. My guess is that if / when he is a FA he will try and catch on with a stronger playoff team. If he is willing to be a utility guy he would pretty much rocket to "best middle infield utility player" in the league.

I would definitely not take him over Sosa. Segura was a decent 2B, he's not actually a good fielder/utility guy. His strength was his bat and that is gone.

The previous 3 seasons were much better, kinda hard to believe he has fallen off the cliff this fast. I would think that there was something about playing in Miami that wasn't working.

Sosa has been pretty bad this year too, he just doesn't have enough AB to get horrible WAR.

(Deleting this, he is actually at 0.1WAR in 200 AB. Honestly it really feels worse)

Sosa is still only 27 though, and is twice the fielder Segura is even with his struggles this year. Plus he's been much better offensively (without actually being good).

Jean was actually cooked last year I think. He came back reasonably well from the injury but then stunk in September and the playoffs (had a few hits in the one series but a .500 OPS overall). If he's not hitting .300 (or close to it) he has limited value.

I bet Harrison lands quicker than Segura.

Sosa has had his issues playing 3B, but apparently Segura has been much worse. And Segura has zero power this year: 10 XBH in 326 PA.

I wouldn't replace Sosa with Segura, but I wouldn't mind signing Jean to a minor league deal and stashing him there in case of emergency. He's been a bad hitter for only half a season.

Don't forget there's still a 180-player roster limit too. Sure, you could just cut loose Weston Wilson or Scott Kingery if you really wanted Jean. But you could also give them a look!
