I think they go 14 position and 12 pitchers. Gibson and Devenski probably the last two pitchers at this point. Not sure where Hand's rehab is also. Thor over Gibson mainly because he has now relieved a few times and has been a bit better in his last start.

Bench could be the exact same as it is now. Keep Hall for a late inning home run threat. Keep Guthrie to pinch run.

I assume they also won't actually call up any guys from AAA for today or tomorrow. Falter should make his regular start and then get ready to pitch in NLDS. Thor maybe should pitch an inning of relief if he's on a throw day.

They are hoping to have both Hand and Sosa back. If the latter, no Guthrie presumably. If Hand isn't back I might put Falter in the roster in case there's an all hands on deck Game 3 (or extras).

Nelson's the guy you don't really want to need, in any scenario. (Gibson neither if he did make it as a reliever but I think you probably keep him ready to make a start later - even though you don't want that to happen either. But should a guy get hurt or you really need a 5th starter it's either that or Thor in a bullpen game.)

I keep Melson over Gibson . At least Nelson could pitch an inning in relief if needed. I would not allow Gibson near a pitching mound in any situation.

I am just glad that Nelson is a veteran journeyman guy who deserves to be in the playoffs because I do worry that they would still give Gibson a shot for that same kind of reason, more than performance. Still think we might see Gibson in the second round. It's not like he's stunk all year but there's no time to left to find out if he can get back to what he was in August, or to weather his inconsistency in general.

In any case, if Nelson's pitching in Game 2 I hope we've already won Game 1.

It might make sense in ALL of the rounds. Yes we need to deal with a blowout on the pitching side, but that is what a bullpen with Nelson and Falter and Thor (without Gibson) still allows you to do. And in the later series we will have off days so a 5th starter then is a luxury.

I want Falter around as an extra LHP if Hand can't go. Just no argument to keep all the extra starters. I know Thomson does not pinch hit a lot, but Hall provides something nobody else on the bench does - power.

I dunno I just feel like the beat guys usually guess this stuff right. And managers err on the side of pitching and utility.

It depends on the opponent too. Who are the relievers they might need to pinch-hit against, and for who?

Agreed no 5th starter, but I'll believe Gibson's season is over (i.e. that he won't be in the pen) when I see it.

For the first round, Gibson and Hall probably get left off the roster. Assuming Sosa and Hand aren’t back yet, otherwise it gets more complicated. Gibson isn’t need as this round is a sprint and Hall’s only real role is to be a LH power bat off the bench. If Sosa is ready, Guthrie probably sits and Devenski for Hand.

I think this is the most likely round for Hall.... the easiest one to carry five position players, and you don't really need two utility guys. But, they are also going to want pinch-runners.

The Cards' two best relievers are righthanded so I think you just come up with a plan of who you would actually PH for against them in a close game (Vierling yes, Bohm probably, Castellanos maybe, Hoskins no. Marsh and Stott?). If they play the Cards, obviously.

I'm skeptical they are going to do it but think I am in favor of it.

The plot thickens (in that this suggests they might be saving Thor for a potential Game 1. Or Gibson. Both could be tandem type starters I'd think if so).

Probably means Hand is still a question mark too.

Michael Plassmeyer is here today to eat some innings. Phillies optioned Chris Devenski. This might indicate Bailey Falter is on the postseason roster as a reliever. He is scheduled to start today.

FWIW, in the comments, Gelb explicitly says Phillies will carry 13 and 13 and the last guy will either be a healthy Sosa or Guthrie (though I would think you at least consider Munoz as a defensive 3B sub, which is what Gelb says Sosa might do).

Turns out we weren't even asking the right question when it came to the pitchers. (I mean, I guess on paper it makes sense, Gibson never lost his spot in the rotation despite his performance. Thor did.)

When the Phillies released their National League wild-card series roster this morning, reliever Nick Nelson was notably absent. Thomson said in his pregame media availability that it came down whether Phillies would carry Noah Syndergaard or Nelson on their roster, and they picked Syndergaard because he could provide them some length.

“We wanted to make sure that we were covered on length just because it’s not the runner at second base in extra innings type of thing,” Thomson said. “It’s a regular game now. And it could happen today, and it could happen tomorrow. So we gotta have a couple of those guys that can at least give us some length.”

I would have kept Hall over Gibson and Nelson.....Gibson isn't going to make a relief apperance, so why keep him on this roster?

Length of series matters to me. In a 3-game series there is just little chance we will go through ALL of the long options. In a longer series I might have chosen otherwise.

The choice probably does not matter too much since we rarely pinch hit. Frankly there could be a case to keep both Guthrie and Sosa for pinch running. Sosa running for Bohm got us a run yesterday. We might have needed another runner if the game went to extra innings. These are all luxuries in a short series. For 5-7 games I want the extra pitcher.

The team has pretty clearly stated their reason for going with the extra pitcher (and with six starters specifically). We're just smarter than they are.
