All speculation, but some real possible negatives here:

Bryce Harper's UCL tear: Timelines, risks and what it means for Phillies

• It's possible the UCL injury happened after/as a result of the flexor injury.

• if he does need TJ, recovery time could be 9-12 months because it's his throwing arm

The writer thinks it has been a mistake to let him DH, even though he's continued to hit, and that if he strains it further while hitting it could end his season. Also mentions such comparables as Didi (who has surgery) and Muncy (who has not).

If he has surgery, he misses a season, whether this year or next year.
Next year, hopefully Moniak will be ready to supply LH power as a corner OF.
This season, there really is no one who can fill in.

Girardi said Jean Segura is out of the lineup tonight because he wanted to give him a day off. He'll be available to pinch hit.

It's a long, long way from Allentown to LA, both literally and figuratively.

It's always kind of amazing to me what they put some of these guys through travel-wise. I mean they are elite athletes, but at the same time, even a touch of travel weariness and jet lag puts them at a disadvantage against other elite athletes. It would make sense to have a two-man taxi squad if you are crossing two time zones or more rather than flying extra pitchers or injury replacements across the country mid-series.

Ended up being much ado about nothing

Saw a few questions about Nick Maton getting pulled from the lineup today in LV coinciding with the timing of Segura getting a rest day. Source says that Maton isn't getting called back up to the big league team. He was pulled out the lineup tonight because he wasn't feeling well

MOniak showed real power this spring, with a half season in Lehigh, he could be ready to be a LH bat in the ML.

He's not going to "replace" Harper, but he may end up far better than anyone this season, unless they decide to bring up Hall as a DH platoon. Other than Hall, there is no one who can come up and give them anything from the left side.

I mean, let's hope so, but we gotta see it first. Plus at this point for Moniak "half a season in Lehigh" would bring him to August.

But also if Harper really does suffer a season-ending injury and the Phillies are contending, they would probably trade for someone. Getting someone who is a little better defensively, or better yet, upgrading CF and letting Herrera and Quinn get more time at the corners with Schwarber and Castellanos DHing would also be fine.

Regarding Moniak, you have to be able to count on a guy who put up .381/.415/.725 in spring training, right?

Oh wait, that was Kingery in 2018...

My favorite spring training line will always be Eric Bruntlett, 2009.

30 games, 76 ABs, .355 BA 1.005 OPS

2009 reguar season:

72 games, 105 ABs, .171 BA, .462 OPS, end of major league career.

Granted, he was Eric Bruntlett and he was 31, whereas you with a pedigreed young player (and especially a rookie) you know it is inflated but hope there will be adjustments and improvements to come.

Speaking of Scotty Jetpax, still not even playing in the minors yet right? I don't think he's even really behind schedule, it was just nice to fantasize that he might get going in AAA for a couple of months and become a depth option. Hey, at least Torreyes is gone!

I guess he's just better off hoping for an injury and a 40-man spot (or at least another opt-out) then taking the first minor league deal on the table.

Or else nobody else in baseball besides Joe Girardi actually likes him better than any other fungible.

That link says it is Kingery's last AB in extended spring training, so he's about to head north? Or did it just mean "most recent"?

Lou Helming sighting in that extended game. He is the 18-year-old 6'5" German OF we signed in January. Looks like a raw but athletic kid from the writeup and photo. Interesting that he trained with the Dominican team for a while. I know that it is rare for a non-Latino kid to be sent to the DSL, but this kid probably would get more playing time down there than at FCL.

It is starting to look like going from having a Top 5 offense to having a #1 or #2 offense actually does make a difference (with or without better pitching).
