Hoskins has always been a really patient hitter who drew a lot of walks, but his BB% dropped from 15% to 10% last season, and is staying there. Love to see his patience come back, granted that 10% is not awful.

Sigh, looks like I jinxed the bullpen.

Unfortunately, it looks like we still have a bottom-tier bullpen (see the below interactive link). How is it that the Yankees and usually Athletics have good bullpens year-in, year-out while we always have a bad one? It certainly can't be a matter of money, as we've spent money there (like the Yankees) but still have a bad bullpen while the Athletics have not but they have a good bullpen most seasons. How is it that some organizations just know how to make the "special sauce" when it comes to building a bullpen?

Knebel, Hand, Familia, Dominguez, Alvarado have combined for 31 BB and 7 HBP in 60.1 innings.

I would like to think it's still a small sample at least (per pitcher, and also thrown out of whack by a few especially horrific innings) and some of these guys will be fine. The trick is finding out which one, and which ones don't have options.

Wonder how Coonrod is doing. Even the waiver guys on the 60, they were all supposed to part of the new assistant GM's gift for unearthing rough diamonds, but they have to be healthy first.

Coonrod was starting to throw bullpens a week ago. He'll need a full rehab stint though so it is likely he is at least a month away if not more. JoJo Romero is also throwing and seems to be on a track to be back sometime in the second half though with TJ surgery it is always kind of 50-50 that pitchers are ready at the 1-year mark which I think is June for him.

We will have some replacements for the second half with Morales prominent there too if he does well in AAA. Mark Appel probably is on their radar too if a 40-man spot opens up.

I've often considered WHIP to be a reliever's most important stat. You simply don't want him lettering guys on base, perod. Phillies relievers are beating themselves, not really getting hit.

I think WHIP is certainly more useful than ERA or W-L. K/9 and HR/9 also important. If you're a strikeout pitcher who doesn't give up home runs you can walk that one guy per inning. For five pitchers to combine for 1.49 is obviously not good!

Individually, Seranthony is okay (1.098 is second on the team behind only Nola), Knebel is not acceptable for your alleged top guy (1.267) Familia is as bad as we think (1.5) and Alvarado's worst (1.864).

And yet Seranthony and Alvarado have about the same FIP (2.00) because they have not allowed any home runs and are still high strikeout guys.
