The Phillies only have one player on the 40-man roster who is in his age 33 season or older:

Kyle Gibson (34)

In 2021, the fewest players age 33+ any team had was 2 (Pirates).

Norwood was moved to the bereavement list for 3-7 days starting today. He'll need to be activated at the end of that period or DFA'd. He is the only one of the relievers without options so he could very well be activated next week.

The Phillies have a chance this year to do something they have never done before (I dont think anyway)

If Stott, Bohm, Nola and Moniak appear in the same lineup at some point.. I think it will be the first time they had 4 home grown 1st round picks in the same lineup.

1980 saw Larry CHristensen, Greg Luzinski and Lonnie Smith and the 2008 Phillies had Utley, Burrell and Hamels, Golson and Myers. But Golson was never in a game at the same time as either of the 2 pitchers

I already forgot Adam Haseley existed.

In September 2020 Haseley, Moniak and Bohm were in the same lineup with Nola pitching. So this will be the 2nd time... If they hadnt traded Haseley.. they could have had 5! lol

That seems crazy considering Nola, Bohm, Moniak and Haseley have all been on the roster at various points over the last two seasons.

Corrected my post. You are right.. happened in 2020.

I was surprised that given there have been 4 players around the roster so much over the past 2 seasons that its so rare but when you look at their draft history there was really only JP Crawford between Nola and Hamels who could have contributed to that and Hamels and Nola would never be in a game together (in their 5 or so days on the roster together).

Mike Lieberthal (1990) started at catcher.
Gavin Floyd (2001) came in as a relief pitcher, and later in the game both Pat Burrell (1998) and Chase Utley (2000) pinch hit in the pitchers spot.

While looking for this I also found this game where there were 3 Phillies first rounders, but also Eric Valent leading off for the Mets. That sort of thing is probably very common, especially with J.D. Drew out there.

When I was going through this exercise I kept getting excited by Doug Glanville, who I had forgotten was drafted by the Cubs.

wow.. ok so my research was way too quick and sloppy. Im normally better than that because I love stats and quirks like this. I really thought this was an oddity for the Phillies but it wasnt.

Lieberthal was the key, easy to overlook as he was drafted a decade earlier than the other players.

Heres one with Lieberthal, Utley, Burrell and Myers from 2006. I promise I'll stop now but this was a fun little excercise.

Wow, who do they even bring up in the short term? Assume That means Vierling gets most of the starts there now, but do they bring up Muzziotti? I think he and Ortiz are the only outfielders on the 40 man?
We could actually see Bryce in CF occasionaly until Herrera is back?

An OF of Schwarber, Harper and Castelllanos should have every Phillies pitcher starting to work on a sinker.

Matt Veirling just became a very important man

I was kind of joking in the minor league thread that Dalton Guthrie was plan D since he was 5-9 with a BB in the first 2 LHV games. A 60-day move for Moniak is very possible if Moniak can't start rehab for 2 weeks.

More likely is Maton grabs that OF glove again and Vierling is the starter 90% of the time until Herrera is back.

Other option is Muzziotti even though they would prefer he plays every day in the minors. He could get 1 or 2 starts a week and be a defensive sub/pinch runner. It would be a little daring if they chose him, though the Marchan move does show a little more creativity than in the past.

The hardhearted cynic in me says that the Moniak renaissance was probably just a ST mirage anyway. The realist in me says that his being able to keep going and keep working actively with Long may have been his last chance to salvage a meaningful tenure with the Phillies and that chance has now been lost.
