It is a little bit comparable in that Camargo now will get the starts when Didi is sitting against LHP. Agree that they will recall someone if there is an injury, but this move is a little about Camargo playing more SS which is what Torreyes would do if he is on the bench. He probably is not as good defensively as Torreyes, but the offensive gap is much larger especially when Camargo is reduced to mainly playing against LHP and as the defensive sub/occasional starter for Bohm.

I think Camargo is better right now. Whether it’s because he’s hot, Stott isn’t ready, or Stott is another Kingery, we don’t know (hopefully not the latter…).

Cargargo has 590 MLB innings at SS and 3482 innings at SS in the minors, all together at or just a shade below league averages defensively. His defensive numbers compare nicely against Torreyes at both levels. The reality is, both are probably better on defense than Didi at this point. Camargo profiles as an average to above average defensive 3B and 2B, and if he keeps hitting, the Phillies will need to consider that when shaping the roster for 2023.

Also nice that Camargo is a switch hitter. A good signing that strengthens the team this season.

I just think they are not comparable in that Camargo is a younger player who still has a chance to re-reach the potential he showed both early in his Braves career and in AAA last year. If so, he's an everyday player, a status Ronald Torreyes was never going to touch.

I guess they just didn't expect Camargo to hit well enough to tolerate him at SS, because if they were willing to play him there from Day 1 there was really never any reason to sign Torreyes, and less reason to have Stott too.

I love how the coverage says Bohm, Didi and Camargo are all playing well, therefore squeezing out Stott. Last I checked Didi... wasn't.

Camargo was blocked, went down to AAA ball last year and tore it up.
He was a 3 WAR player at 23-24 years old, struggled at 25, hardly played at 26.
So at 27, instead of sulking, puts up a RC+ 155, 10.8% BB, 16.5 K% .231 ISO in AAA.

This was a moneyball signing if I've ever seen one, zero downside, starter potential upside, solid depth player as the expected value.

The kind of smart move the Phillies haven't made on a consistent basis in the past.

Hate to say it, but the Phils are playing better since Herrera is back. Poor Moniak, it should have been his job, and I think he would have played well. If Herrara plays like this, Moniak probably goes to AAA.

Hasn't he lately help let a pop up drop in that cost the team a run and potential game. Last night he got an "assist" does that count as a good thing, lol.

I'm not sure I bought into the idea that Moniak would be able to keep doing what he did in spring training any more than Stott could (or that Vierling would be able to keep doing what he did for six weeks last year). Would have been nice to find out but I'd say it's 50-50 we would have ended up exactly here anyway (i.e. a struggling Moniak would have been optioned once Herrera got healthy).

If he gets to AAA - which he'll have to do for rehab anyway - and doesn't miss a beat he will ultimately get his chance I'm sure - almost no chance of Herrera and Quinn both staying healthy and consistently productive all season.

LHP on the mound for CO this afternoon so they are dusting off the mothballs on Vierling AND giving Roman Quinn the start in CF. Schwarber sits at the beginning which is probably a good idea the way he is struggling. He has had significant platoon splits even in his good years and imagine he'll hit at some point anyway.

The problem is it's debatable whether Roman is truly better as a RHB - though he has also had so few ABs overall in his career that you could still call it a small sample.

He has slugged LHP better, resulting in a 108 OPS+, but that also comes with a .287 OBP (vs. .315 as a LHB).

Against starting pitchers only (LH or RH) his numbers are actually identical. .660 OPS, 100/99 OPS+.

I guess the real story is Quinn is still better than Schwarber (career .681 OPS against LHP but a 68 OPS+).

In the minors Quinn typically had medium platoon splits. Always had more power right-handed which was his natural side. Assume that is true on the major league team for Camargo also.

Without Stott Didi actually becomes more important as this team hits lefties much better than righties. A left-handed bat that produces beyond Harper and hopefully Schwarber is needed and I am not counting on Odubel to produce consistently. I really thought Stott was going to help balance the lineup.

Well, playing Colorado has singlehandedly brought Didi back to his 2020 form. Even just slightly above-average offense from CF and SS makes this team a powerhouse with Bohm locked in. Any one slump or absence from the bigger bats (i.e. Schwarber) can be overcome if that's the case.

And as ever it's not hard to see why you want to give Quinn a chance if you can!

Quinn has a game like this once in a while and it becomes easy to dream about what could be or could have been. Sadly though, games such as today are few and far for Roman. No harm in making him the RH/CF platoon for now. It's not as though Vierling is producing. The yearly CF experiment continues

Sending Vierling down is possible, though the player we really want to call up is Stott. Not sure Maton makes that much of a difference. Going with 6 OFs is not the worst decision since one will usually be DHing and you do want to use Quinn as a pinch runner somewhat often (could be for Hoskins, Schwarber, Bohm, even Castellanos).

As long as Harper can't play the field the whole calculation is a little different. There's also talk of the Phillies carrying the extra pitcher, though they also said otherwise in one of the stories I read.

Quinn is a perfect 5th OF/26th man when healthy. He won't hit consistently. He won't look great if he plays 9 innings in the field. But as a guy who can get you the occasional bunt hit or stolen base, and a defensive sub for a bunch of OFs who aren't good, and a once a week #9 hitter in front of some big bats at the top of the order, play him 'til he breaks again. Unfortunately, he will.

I like the idea of going with 2 OF among our four bench players. Camargo seems sufficient to cover infield depth for now. Having Vierling, Quinn and Herrera available to mix and match adds some versatility, particularly on defense, and some additional speed.

Impressive thing about Bohm's HR was it was pulled through a stiff breeze.
While I like how he uses the opposite field, you have to pull some long balls to keep pitcher honest and scare them out of pounding you inside with FBs.
Looks like Long has him straightened out.
And Bohm looks confident in the field as well.

Bohm settling in at 3B solves a lot of problems for this team, a potentially elite bat and filling a key spot on the field makes it much easier going forward to build lineups.
