Rumor is that the Guardians are absolutely desperate for a first baseman after having lost their top two to injuries. DD apparently likes Plesac who, with a little love from our coaching staff could be a solid starter. We would have 2 more years of control with him. Is he worth Darick Hall? To me that could happen.

You gotta give to get. If the Castillo deal has inflated the value of someone like Mahle, then walk away. But they may well still be able to get Thor or Quintana, neither of whom are a clear upgrade (but could be). If you think Quintana can continue to pitch as he has (and in the playoffs) or you value Thor's track record (and don't worry about his health/innings) they could both look pretty good.

Teams that have talked to the #Phillies say they've backed off on bullpen and are shopping for a starter who can start a playoff game.

They've been in on Syndergaard & Mahle. I've heard them connected to Quintana, but like last year, Dave Dombrowski values control over rentals

Bullpen thing possibly makes sense (but also doesn't mean they won't end up getting someone). As far as replacing Familia goes, either Coonrod or Appel (who is only up temporarily now) could and there are also younger guys you might hope to help (like Miller now moving up the depth chart with Romero gone, and Sheriff is still on the 60-day).

I cannot see Plesac as a game three starter in the playoffs. That seems like it would fall to Suarez right now. I could see him as a very attractive lower cost addition for next year and beyond.

If the Pirates would take Abel, Rojas and Vieiling for Reynolds and Quintana, I'd do that, but they seem to be set on holding onto Reynolds.

I'm not even sure I'd go that hard for Reynolds.

Matt G wrote about this and Matt W tweeted about it earlier - Dombrowski has been suggesting that he sees one or two of Abel, Painter or McGarry as being able to help as soon as next year, and definitely in 2024. If they are right that certainly changes the trajectory. Of course they could still trade any one of them in the off-season or the next deadline if you think you have more of a division/championship contending team.

We shall see if Trader Dave really lives, or if age and if the understandable need to protect the farm makes him no more aggressive than his predecessor!

I mean, I think you are basically conceding there that this is not an NLCS-caliber Phillies team without a ton of luck, and I'm okay with that if the market is high. Because you don't want a generic "Game 3-4" starter, you want a very clear #3 starter - possibly controllable - if you start including one of the top guys.

This is pretty much what it whittles down to for me as well.

I could read but not contribute. great to see that DD has those prospects off the table. although it could be posturing, but I agree that the top 3 hurlers could be 2 years away and Brown not too far behind. I know that prospects most likely fail, but the Phils have to get younger at some point with good players. And for the people that are looking for a 3rd starter, are they discounting Suarez. who would be better than him. I'm hoping Eflin comes back, but what pitcher (plus trading away prospects) would be better than suarez? Also, no on that much for reynolds. too iffy.

Ben Brown may not be behind Abel and Painter, at least. Brown was promoted to AA after today's games, so he's now a level ahead of Abel and Painter, and at the same level as McGarry. Now, obviously we don't know how he'll fare against AA batters (and in Eastern League parks), but strictly on the basis of placement, he is "positionally ahead" of Abel and Painter as of now.

I think this team can win at least one series in this year’s playoffs. 2023 with addition of Trea Turner, we win the pennant.

I mean right now they would play the Brewers, which could turn into the Cardinals, and the evidence this season says they can take a series from either, including on the road. Won't be easy, but doable.

I do kind of think that when the smoke clears, Dombrowski will get his starting pitcher, and maybe he does give up one of the bigger names (though not the biggest). I guess it still really depends how many other buyers are out there with more to offer (and higher stakes).

The Brewers swapped closers with the Padres, and got three prospects in the deal. The Brewers probably would have moved Hader in the winter otherwise.

I guess they figure the difference between Hader and Rodgers isn't all that much - and they got three prospects in the exchange.

Definitely not the kind of package I expected. Rogers is a free agent after this year, Lamet is oft-injuried, Gasser = Brown, and Ruiz looks like a nice player - probably what we'd hope Rojas would become.

And it leaves the Padres with pieces for a much bigger deal.

Sure Rogers is good this year and they have a potential closer next year in Williams, but the only good prospect may be Gasser. Ruiz has not done much in the majors. Lamet has the injury bug. Still could work but I would want more for one of the best young closers.

Not that it should make a huge difference, but I already feel like St. Louis is going to win the Central and we are competing with the Brewers, so if this costs them even one game, it might matter.

Hader's Hader but this is not his best year and even really good relief pitchers are not going to get the same value as SPs and position players, especially given his projected salary next year too (and then you lose him after next season). Given that I'd say the Brewers did well. But also should have dealt him sooner if that's where they are.

I am betting on the Cardinals getting Soto too (though not discounting the rich teams either). The Cardinals have prospects that line up with what the Nats need and could handle the salary for the next 2+ years. Not having Hader in Milwaukee is definitely a good thing for us though I guess it is possible that deal will be close to a wash this season and a plus for them next year.

Yeah the Soto rumors are part of my expectation and also if they don't get Soto they will certainly have a back-up move.

Of course then we'd have to play them in the first round too.
