The Phillies acquire RHP Merrill Kelly and OF David Peralta from the Arizona Diamondbacks for RHP Griff McGarry and RHP Cristian Hernandez

The Phillies acquire OF Ian Happ and RHP David Robertson from the Chicago Cubs for C Logan O’Hoppe, OF Simón Muzziotti, and LHP Erik Miller

The Phillies acquire 2B/OF Whit Merrifield and RHP Brad Keller from the Kansas City Royals for OF Ethan Wilson and RHP Ben Brown.

I think I am past wanting Merrifield. The money left is not awful. He has just aged in a normal way for a guy that got a late start in his career and depends on speed. Really has not played much 3B also so this is 2B/OF. I think there are better fits.

Keller seems a lesser version of Gibson. Decent starting depth but really not better than our current 5th starter options if healthy.

Yeah I don't get Merrifield at this point. He's not even an upgrade over Camargo in the short-term and expecting him to bounce back - especially not to 2019 levels - next year is a lot to ask. He's cheap this year and his 2023 deal is an option, so it's certainly a bargain shopping path.

I don't believe you have to trade McGarry or O'Hoppe in either of those other deals (but especially not O'Hoppe).

I might do this deal if they could swing Michael A Taylor in a separate trade. Peralta in LF where he is well above average defensively and Taylor in CF would be a big upgrade on D. Kyle moves to DH. Kelly under contract for 2 more years at a reasonable price.

I'm not convinced McGarry will have the command to remain a starter.

AA should test him, especially pitching in a band box. I have high hopes that he is figuring it out and is going to be a solid MLB starter. I wouldn't trade him unless it was for someone like Reynolds or Mullins.

The most meaningful trade piece the Phil’s could obtain is Luis Castillo from the Reds. He would be a huge boost to a depleted starting rotation. He would fit in easily as a strong No. 3?in the rotation. He is signed thru 2023. Should we include O’Hoppe as part of a package to obtain him?

Murphy reckons even one of the two pitchers have to be considered, though Castillo's not as appealing as an extension candidate (unless he takes a short one).

Any interest in David Dahl, just released by Brewers, to replace Moniak? This would allow Moniak to play everyday in AAA.

If we were to include Painter or Abel with O'Hoppe we should be able to easily obtain both Castillo and Hoffman from the Reds. Maybe substitute MCGarry. But if we could get both Hoffman and Castillo it would really strengthen the pitching staff.

We already have Herrera to replace Moniak though. Dahl is worse than both Herrera and Vierling these days. Moniak will go down shortly when we add an infielder (Camargo and/or Maton).

In the end they did exactly what they said they were going to do with Moniak - give him a couple of weeks during that stretch of righties when it didn't really matter because Herrera wasn't better anyway (and was memorably worse on one fielding play). Now with Vierling's play (and the fact that he won't be needed in the infield, though i guess we'll see about that) it's time. No point in doing anything else for the next two weeks (when trade deadline heats up). If you make a move for any kind of outfielder you presumably release Herrera (or throw him in to the trade though a lot of teams may pass on that or he wouldn't be on the Phillies this year for that $ in the first place).

Do you think it would be feasible to trade McGarry, O'Hoppe, Ortiz and then a throw in like Crouse or Morales to to the Reds to get Castillo, Hoffman and Pham ? That would solve all of our issues in one trade.

I do think if Dombrowski takes that big a swing he definitely should be trying to get a pitcher and an OF at the same time. Could do that with Oakland too. Possibly Pittsburgh or Baltimore as well?

Just not sure they really will go hard after a clear #3, rather than another Gibson type. A team with this many injuries and very little chance of winning divison probably takes medium-sized swings.

I do think that big swing at No. 3 could go a long way towards putting us into a better position for the playoffs and also to win at least one round. Another Gibson type move will do little besides providing a warm body.

I suspect that whatever trade we make will include O'Hoppe. so we might as well try to maximize our return.

I am not seeing the Phillies on several of the Castillo trade articles that have started popping up. That is probably because too many teams ahead of them - and with better farm systems - are going to want him.

I just don't think you trade two Top 100 prospects unless you think you can win the division (which is possible of course, but still remote). It would be a lot to go big for a #3 starter who might not even pitch in a playoff game (remember, all three games in the first round will be on the road). But there's no doubt they need it - and they are in a pretty bad spot in that they won't truly know how Eflin and Suarez look before the trade deadline.
