I would care about that perceived foot on the scale if the Phillies were actually on an equal - or greater - level with the Cards in any way (market, budget size, but most of all, competence). It's a tiny thing that the Phillies could close the gap on 10 different ways just by spending (on non-salary things) or being good at this.

Montas to the Yankees for 4 prospects. Pretty good return. Probably more than we would pay if we are not dealing our top arms. Our deal is starting to feel like a minor deal for a back end arm like Quintana. Or them picking up salary for Thor and not really dealing anyone for that.

Definitely a bargain compared to Castillo though the top prospect (Waldichuk) has had a velocity spike and is probably considered top 100 these days. Probably comparable to McGarry in terms of value (less stuff still but more history of performance and at AAA now).

Getting down to the wire. Will the Phillies do anything? I suspect they will, but I am at a total blank as to what to expect. I would not be surprised to be totally surprised. Then again, maybe nothing of significance gets done.

Mahle is stil out there. So is Thor both of whom we have been linked to. Zack Pkesac is also still out there. Eovaldi also. I read somewhere that we could have had Mahle if parted with Painter or Abel but DD said no. Rendon is also out there. So it appears the DD is not willing to destroy the farm system.

Hard to get a read on what the Giants might do, but even harder with the Red Sox. I would still rather wake up (or get to game time) to a big surprise than a ho-hum depth move. Cards also got a reliever in Quintana deal but if Phillies weren't in on that is it because they think they can do better or are willing to do worse?
