Nobody's trading (or trading for) Hoskins. Maybe in the off-season if things need to be shaken up. Until then he is simultaneously too valuable to the Phillies' offense and not that valuable on the trade market.

Taking from other thread, I'd love to hear from @Matt_Winkelman just how many guys on this list you might actually trade, and for what. And particularly what might be worth McGarry ("it would need to be special") or O'Hoppe/Lee ("you have to give to get.")

I would trade anyone in the right deal. I generally would prefer to trade from the upper minors than like Jersey Shore or FCL. For example I wouldn't move like Estanista as a throw in, but if he was the key piece to a good reliever, sure. It is all about getting the value for what you are trading.

For the Lee/O'Hoppe group - If the Reds loved O'Hoppe and would take him as the lead alongside another good player like Lee or Brown for Castillo, absolutely. Probably the same for Montas or Mahle.

I don't really know what I would trade McGarry for because the thing is probably not available. I guess a conversation about one of the Marlins starters or Tarik Skubal. They don't make me want to do it, but you have to a conversation about it. He is pretty untouchable and probably closer to Abel/Painter.

As for those two, I know you didn't ask, but it is the Red Sox are taking offers for Devers tier, or something like that.

True, though that is usually in the context of us having too many 1B and Hoskins not aging well in the position to re-sign as a free agent. The context now is different though. We are not rebuilding in place. We can't count on Hall to replace Hoskins offensively when Harper is back simply because Hall is not as good as Hoskins.

So if you want to make the playoffs and do damage this year, it is hard to see where Hoskins trade scenarios fit in since he is one of the 2 current bats on the team that are productive at the moment.

Yeah I had no problem discussing a Hoskins trade last off-season, though his value has also been highlighted some in his absence. I also would have considered trading him before the season started (once they signed Castellanos and with talk of Didi or Stott playing 3B) but there was no market.

Now, mid-season, with this roster and a struggling Castellanos, no chance. Doesn't mean you don't revisit it in November. Either way they are in trouble if Castellanos doesn't bounce back. And Hall can't really replace him as LHB, while Castellanos and Bohm don't have the power.

Seems like another guy who's really not a CF (and at 34 years old, not surprising). And having a bit of an off-year at the plate too. An upgrade in LF (or over Hall until Harper comes back) but not a great fit.

Tyler Naquin to the Mets for 2 low level prospects (only one ranked 30th by Fangraphs). He is left-handed and can be below average in CF, so this is the type of deal the Phillies could have made to improve the left-handed side of the platoon, but guessing the Phillies really don't see it as much of an upgrade if the defense is a bit worse than what they have.

That analysis of the Mets deal, for me, just highlighted how hamstrung the Phillies are by their mix (as well as Harper's injury). He will likely never play CF for them, and he can also DH (or move someone else to DH). Meanwhile all three of the Mets' starting OFs have been CFs.

The Mets have one of the game’s best outfields, with a trio of Mark Canha, Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte manning the grass. Canha and Marte will continue to pick up the lion’s share of playing time in the corners, but Naquin complements those veteran right-handed bats. He’ll also supplement a DH group that includes Vogelbach and Dominic Smith from the left side, as well as the righty-swinging J.D. Davis.

Well it looks like DD has some pieces to work with in a trade. Our system no longer seems completely barren. Will be interesting to see what DD does.

Dombrowski to pay more for a mid-range target or reinforces that he won't be getting anything more than a #5/depth piece.

It's clear that is their target, but circling back to the idea of moving Nola, you would get a HAUL from the Yankees or Dodgers for him based on this.

I hear you, but the Reds are a cheap last-place small market team and the Phillies are a profligate big market team that would be in the playoffs today. You trade Nola you may as well wait for the call from Harper asking for a trade. Maybe the off-season is different but it would still have to be for major league ready help.
