2022 MLB Trade Deadline Rumors and Discussion

MLB..com unranked, 21 and 19. Pretty sure even without looking I would trade three equivalent Phillies for a lot of people.

We have acquired RHPs Chandler Champlain and Beck Way, and LHP T.J. Sikkema from the New York Yankees in exchange for OF Andrew Benintendi.

Our roster now stands at 39 players, we will announce a corresponding move tomorrow.

Seidman says Ian Happ from the Cubs could be a possible CF target. He still has another year of control however, so I’m not sure we’ll get him quite as cheaply as the Yankees got Benitendi. He also mentioned Givens, Robertson, and Smyly as potential one stop shopping.

Happ would probably be adequate in CF kind of like Odubel, but certainly an upgrade offensively.

BA did have all 3 in the top 30 with Way at 13 and the Yankees are deeper than the Phillies. But still a modest return with the Yankees seemingly picking up the remaining $3.5 million on Benintendi's contract.

If the Phillies are willing to pick up salary we could get a 4th starter and a bullpen piece without dealing any top 20 prospects. It would get trickier with controllable arms. I am curious if the Phillies would target a young arm like Tarik Skubal who has been having a breakout year. We would need to trust the scouts to determine if that performance is sustainable, but I am guessing the Phillies would love to fill at least one of the two open rotation spots next year. They'll probably bring one of Gibson/Eflin back but can't imagine both.

Benintendi is fool's gold. A LF (primarily) without a lot of power or patience. He's probably a 110-115 OPS+ player at this point, not a significant upgrade over Odubel and Vierling. I honestly wouldn't trade as much as the Yankees did for him, unless he is some specific "fit" for them to balance their lineup.

Happ is a better player, probably 125 OPS+, more patience, more power, and a year younger.

Benintendi is batting 320 and is having a really decent season except for the lack of power. He is not in the same world as Vierling or Odubel. His ops+ is 123

That's not really close.

Even a 110 OPS+ would be a significant - make that massive - upgrade over our current CFs. And our RF.

It's his best season, largely based on an unsustainable BA and BABIP. That's why it's fool's gold, it's an outlier performance that the Yanks are paying for. The downside isn't the cost, it's the opportunity cost of playing him and not looking for a real upgrade (which they can afford).

And he is defensively not an upgrade in CF. That's why he doesn't play there anymore.

Watching Benintendi, I would jump for joy if he was added to the Phillies lineup. When KC traded for him last year, it surprised a lot of us because KC wasn't knocking on the door of contention. They gave up De La Rosa the 17 year old live arm for him.

I think we are stuck with Schwarber's and Castellano's gloves in the outfield making CF the only true upgrade that can be made at this time.

I don't think the Phillies needed Benintendi per se, they probably would rather have a lesser bat and better CF. But my interest was more to note that he did not cost any top prospects (barely even Top 20, if you go by MLB), since people keep saying the Phillies shouldn't trade any of those.They won't, unless it's for a much better player than they seem likely to pursue/be able to get.

I'm really hoping for Ian Happ I think. On Fangraphs he looks like about an average CF: 4 runs below average in 1626 innings playing there. I admit I have not seen him play live very much, but he is a more solid offensive performer over his career and I like that he has another season of team control.

True - not close, but AB becomes a Free Agent after this season, right? I also wouldn't be surprised if NY uses him in a bigger trade before the deadline ....

They need to move Gallo first (and supposedly want something for him though I assume that's also because the new team wouldn't be paying any salary).

Happ probably would cost you a top prospect, though they also might try to bundle as andy mentioned.

I'd really like to see Laureano patrolling CF. I am not as panicked about the pitching as reporters seem to be. The cost for Montas, Quintana, MadBum, Syndegaard, Mahle, etc. is going to be super high. But I am also optimistic Eflin returns soon.
Wonder what the Phillies could get for Gibson to one of these starting pitching starving teams.
Is Michael Taylor an option?
Would DD consider trading Hoskins to a Cleveland or Houston? They need 1B/DH help and Bohm/Hall at 1B is acceptable as long as there is a decent return for Hoskins.
I am not saying give away Hoskins or Gibson, but what can they fetch? Now Castellanos, Gregorious I'd give away.

Are we giving up on the season? Who is our 5th starter if we trade Gibson? Hall is a rookie who is already down to an .820 OPS after the hot start. We havent yet seen if he can adjust after the league starts adjusting.

Any trade of Hoskins makes our lineup worse (unless its for Ohtani or something)

I think the Phillies need to assume that Eflin will not pitch again this year as they approach the trade deadline. He does not seem close and they shut him down after they start ramping up his throwing.

I am not sure they want either Gibson or Eflin back next year also, so my assumption is their first priority is a controllable starter and that is worth giving up a couple of non top 10 prospects. Guys like Francisco Morales and Jhailyn Ortiz probably look decent to other clubs now given that they have some upside.

How about Happ and Givens from the Cubs? Could do it without including O’Hoppe, Abel, and Painter? I’m less enamored with McGarrity given how many stuff/no control guys we’ve seen come and go. McGarrity, Sands or Marchan, and pick another top 30 kid outside those mentioned above?

McGarry has lots of value. Almost as much as Abel and Painter these days. Those 3 pitchers plus O'Hoppe (not counting Crawford) are really the prospects we do not want to trade. Benintendi did not require anyone close to that level and I am guessing we will not get anyone as good as Benintendi, so hoping no top 10 prospects get traded. Probably a given we trade either Marchan or Sands. No room on the 40-man roster for both anyway. O'Hoppe will go on that roster next year.

I think they want a part-time CF and that's about it position player-wise. Laureano would be an upgrade but he would cost quite a bit given all those years of control (and with the risk that the player he is this year is actually the player he'll be - or worse - the rest of the way, because his 2019 self probably isn't coming back).

But Happ is also a switch-hitter who can play multiple positions, certainly appealing even if his defense probably isn't actually that good (in CF at least).

I agree Eflin probably isn't coming back but even if he does the Phillies can't subtract a starting pitcher.

Bohm and/or Hall are not acceptable replacements at 1B for Hoskins. They are not even close. Hoskins is one of the most important hitters on our team right now. He is the only power RH bat.
