Not clear. That was my first reaction... but if the MLB COVID protocols require that anybody with any symptoms must go through the protocol... well, there will be lots of times when a player has a low-grade fever - from a cold, a stomach virus, etc., etc. We all go through that, and the season, plus spring training and (we can hope) post-season, is 8+ months long. People will turn up with random bugs - and if every random fever requires following the COVID protocol, then guys are going to be on the IL for one or two days - and wonât count as on the 40-man while theyâre on the IL.
Yes, it presents opportunities for cheating; given HIPAA, teams cannot legally provide the kind of documentation/evidence that media or fans might want. But I suspect that most of the time, these short-term IL stints will be legitimate (within the requirements of the COVID protocol).
