IMO, the Dodgers adding Betts long term put some serious pressure on Preller to either pony up or give it up. Before the Betts acquisition, I thought that the Dodger's fortunes were fading a bit but now, after adding Betts, the LAD are going to be a force the NL for a while.

Unlike Klentak though, Preller built a great farm system, even after that initial move away from full rebuild. Even after these trades they'll still be ranked way above us. We just don't have the depth or assets to play at the top of the market. But that's all the more reason to go over the tax.

The Oakland A's have acquired left-hander Mike Minor from the Texas Rangers for two players to be named later, sources tell ESPN. A's needed rotation help and get it with a trade for Minor, who's a free agent after this season.

Not that I am expecting much of value but my recollection is that we are currently owed 3 PTBNLs, with the proviso that none of them is currently on their team's current 60 man rosters.

He turned 3+ years of James Shields into Tatis Jr and half a season of Fernando Rodney into James Paddack. He has the Padres looking like a genuine contender with a wide open window so I'd imagine he has a lot of credibility with ownership right now.

But he shortly pivoted after that and had a huge year where he busted the international signing limits by a lot. While the Red Sox did the same primarily to get one player (Moncada), the Padres did it to add 10-15 high-priced players. Some have not panned out, but it gave a system a huge volume of low level prospects (they are still mostly 20 and 21 years old) that allowed the Padres to more aggressively trade other prospects.

That's right. Though I'm not sure we can even say with certainty that they aren't on the other team's 60-man roster. Without the inability to scout it makes sense that teams might not want to commit to someone. Or they might not want to have to carry a new (but not major league-ready) acquisition on their own 60.

Of course, "or cash" is always a possible outcome too.

One name on the market that might be an interesting fit is Archie Bradley. Controllable for 1 more year. Pretty reasonable salary. Would give us 3 back end relievers and he is probably more able to do the 4 and 5 out saves sometimes necessary.

We also need a left-handed reliever. Just hard to tell whether they think Ranger Suarez fills that need as he looks to be activated today. They seem to be handling JoJo Romero with kids gloves, so I assume they do not think he is ready for a major role. His stuff looks pretty good but the location is kind of all over the place and I understand if they want to give him a full year of AAA development to learn how to be a reliever.

I am also interested in the guys mentioned by the Good Phight writer: RHP Joe Musgrove from the Pirates and OF Joey Gallo of the Rangers.

Why would we want Gallo? It is not like we don't have Cutch, Harper, and Bohm at the 3 positions he might play (plus Segura at times).

Musgrove would be getting another back end starter. Is he really better than what we have?

Pure fantasy baseball trade here, but I'm thinking blockbuster deal with the D-Backs. Bradley, Ray, Marte. Taking on the latter two lowers trade price (if we pay their salaries), and maybe Ray turns it around next season after relief pitching/spot starting this year.

Gallo has been "linked" to the Phillies but I don't think there was ever actually anything to it. Supposedly Bruce is coming off the IL today. Otherwise he would replace Bruce with the bonus ability to play 3B.

Money is a question here and it is not really the $100 million claimed losses that keep getting leaked to the media (they are probably losing money but that is an accountant's biased cash flow statement).

The question I think is more about whether we are serious about signing any free agents next time beyond JT. If there are no compensation free agents out there it might be easy to get under the threshold next year without Arrieta, Robertson and a few others. Probably room for a starting pitcher signing and still stay under. I think we want to avoid that compensation for signing a free agent, but the repeater tax next season is less of a concern.

If they sign JT they probably can't - and don't need to - sign another expensive bat. If Cutch or Segura are fading you can find modest SS/2B/OF options, plus you have Haseley (assuming you still have Haseley). A starting pitcher and a reliever, definitely.

To me this is about the Middleton/Klentak dynamic. They both share some of the blame for the Phillies' current payroll situation, but what do they really want out of this season, and how much pressure is really on Klentak? If he's not GMing for his job, he doesn't have to go crazy (and who knows, not exceeding the tax may impress MIddleton more than exceeding it for one playoff series with no fans, and not even at home). If he is GMing for his job and Middleton is willing to exceed the tax, protecting the farm is probably not much of a priority!

Moniak added to the 60 man for unknown reasons.

I believe he has to be on the 60 man to be traded, so I guess it is very possible we have some help coming for the disaster our pick.

Honestly, I would rather not see us give up anything for this silly season. There just isn’t much to gain, I don’t think of this as anything more than an exhibition season, hope they don’t give up any assets to improve our seeding before we get taken out of the playoffs by a better team. Even a non-prospect like Moniak (who appears to be a complete bust) is a minor asset that is better used in a real season.

Blue Jays getting Robbie Ray. Not that I really wanted him this year but last year the interest made more sense.

We've discussed at length in another thread, it's certainly possible he could be traded. But he's also been injured and on rehab in Clearwater so he wasn't ready to report to Allentown until now, and he also still could have been traded without being added to the 60, though I would think any team trading for him would want him at their alternate site right away to get him work and see what they have.

Would be selling low but what are the odds of him being worth more next July?

The problem with Ray is he's on the verge of a non-tender if he doesn't work out, which would take away the controllability value. I still would have rolled the dice though.

I guess it matters if you are getting a longer term asset for Moniak or a rental for this season. My fear is the latter
