I don't understand Salisbury's speculation, considering that there have been like a dozen trades involving PTBNL adding Moniak to the 60 really has no significance. I guess if the acquiring team wants to add him to their 60 man immediately it makes a difference

Moniak would have some value in a trade but agree the move to the 60 was more about his injury rehab. He probably should have been on the 60 all the time and it is not as if he is really ready to help anyone in the majors this year. I do not see a great risk in trading players off the 60 who are to be named later.

Thinking broadly, Kingery is not the worst option to think of trading unless this is the worst "sell low" time to do it. Other teams are looking for controllable assets like the Phillies are, and if we want to trade for a starter that can be controlled for a year or two extra we might have to include something controllable ourselves if we want to hang onto our better remaining prospects. Admittedly I don't know what to make of Kingery. His strike zone judgement did not improve as much as we all hoped last year and the power is somewhat a function of the magic baseballs. I like Kingery, but some of the development has not come through and I am not convinced it was all due to COVID.

Occam's Razor is simply that he was done with his rehab in Clearwater and they want him in camp to play, not that he's going to be traded (and he's certainly not likely to be ready for a call-up). But, speculation is speculation.

Kingery would definitely be someone to consider in the right move but that's more of an off-season decision. I think it's too soon to give up on him and also think the COVID and the nagging injuries can't be discounted, the season is too short for us to ever really find out, especially now that he's benched (and no longer playing a single position which they claimed was important).

Mostly though, I'd be nervous to trade him and then be stuck with Segura while also losing Didi. These are off-season moves.

You also have to wonder how much value Kingery actually has in terms of his controllability. His contract is not at all onerous, but it does eventually get there, at least for a lower-budget team, if he's not a starter or 400 AB bench guy.

Not exactly an area of weakness for the Phillies in 2020 but it would be very cool.

Well, he plays five or six positions. If you moved Grullion in a trade (for pitching) you could carry both Nola and Knapp as useful bats who also catch, and he'd be a huge upgrade on Kingery or Walker right now if his defense is actually good enough in the IF.

But the Phillies' bigger bench need might be a LHB (if they don't feel sure about Bruce).

I really do think they need to be bold about getting another arm (whether it's rotation or relief). It looks like every other team in the division (and league) is going for it, to some extent. We're not going to be significantly better/closer to the World Series next season as currently constituted (and could also be worse if JT doesn't return).

I'd like to see them pick up a controllable, reliable mid rotation starter. Sort of an our depth for your depth move where we move one of Haseley/Kingery/Quinn. Kingery would probably be selling low though.

I hadn't really thought about trading Quinn. Wouldn't really want to, but he's always gonna have that question mark hanging over him. Of course that also limits his value.

Yeah I imagine Haseley has the most value of the three, though they all have their flaws. Haseley is probably the most valuable of the three and the one I'd like to keep the most.
But the idea is we have three players who are somewhat redundant, at least positionally so if we could turn that from 3 CFs (sort of) into 2 CF and number 3 starter that would be a solid move.
I dont know who our trade partners would be, is there a team who has too much pitching and not enough outfielders? Sounds like the 2019 Indians. They are trading Clevinger, when is he a free agent?

We do (sort of) have 3 CFs and we do (sort of) have three IFs for two spots, but if you trade Kingery or rely on him in CF (Haseley would split time there and LF next year) that means you are pretty much stuck with Segura and still need a SS or 2B next year (if you don't sign Didi).

It's not an easy call, but I've come to the point where I don't think the Phillies can be good in 2023 and I'm not sure there will be baseball in 2022, so my feeling is, go for it.

I also think being a playoff team could help with JT, though it's still really only about money, we could lose the next 30 games in a row and he'd still take the deal if we make the high bid.

The way I look at it is this is very nearly a very good 2020 Phillies team, in a weak division with an expanded playoff system. I'm not looking for them to sell the future just for one playoff run but they have a clear weakness in the rotation. So either go pick up a mid rotation starter who is about to be a free agent for a couple of lottery tickets, or solve a 2020/2021/2022 problem with the depth they have. You are right though, solving that problem might cause another problem elsewhere.
I feel like second base is pretty deep around the league though. Plenty of Cesar Hernandez equivalents out there that could be picked up relatively cheap either as a free agent or via trade.

Dylan Bundy would be an interesting target for the Phillies but I doubt we have the right trade chips to interst the Angels

I mentioned the Indians earlier and they might be the perfect trade partner. Their outfield consists of Delino DeShields Jr (ops+ 75) Domingo Santana (58), Jordan Luplow (38) and Greg Allen (40). Tylor Naquin (113) isnthe standout but that's in just 15 games. They also have Oscsar Mercado (-23) and Bradley Zimmer (54) as options on the 40 man.

Unfortunately they may not have any interest in what we have to offer. Haseley (87), Quinn (82) and Kingery (6) do not have eye popping offensive numbers and youd be hoping their controllability/upside is their selling point.

Clevinger has a lot more upside than any of our options but you get back less control (2 more years of Arb) and hed likely take them into the tax.

Lance Lynn and Mike Minor are available too. Lynn is someone I'd be interested in. One year left at 8M but I woudlnt want to give up Haseley/Quinn/Kingery for him.

Realistically it's going to be someone much less appealing or no one at all.

There's no second deadline any year anymore.

Every team wants the same thing, it seems. I certainly understand the argument for not being too aggressive, it's actually the same argument for being aggressive: weird season, anything can happen.

But by the standard the Phillies have set for themselves, and given the perceived pressure on the GM, I would not think they stand pat.

To keep winning with what they currently have requires a whole lot of optimism and best-case scenarios for as many as a half-dozen pitchers (starters and relievers).

It'll be interesting to total up everything the Padres have given up and received after the deadline. They have moved a lot of players and it seems like they are paying a lot to make a run in 2020, but some of these players will be available in 2021 and beyond, are they compressing a lot of mediocre players/prospects into a couple of key contributors?

Edit: Definitely positive that Clevinger has gone to the West and not the Braves as was rumoured.
