Not exactly news but...
6. The MLB amateur draft is this week and it’s an annual chance to take stock of previous drafts. There was something of a milestone a few weeks ago when the Phillies designated Aaron Altherr for assignment. He was the last player in the entire organization from a draft class prior to 2011.
The Phillies still have four players from the ’11 class — Quinn, Adam Morgan, Mitch Walding and Ríos. Two players from the 2012 class are still in the organization, Cozens and Drew Anderson. Andrew Knapp, Jan Hernández and Tyler Viza remain from the 2013 draft.
But the 2008-10 drafts will not be remembered in fond terms. The 2008 class at least produced two big-league starters in Vance Worley (5.1 bWAR) and Jarred Cosart (4.2 bWAR) and a total of 15.1 bWAR for all of the players regardless of whether it came with the Phillies or not.
The 2009 draft — Altherr’s class — produced 5.7 bWAR but 5.8 of it came from a player, A.J. Griffin, who did not sign with the Phillies. The 2010 draft generated 3.1 bWAR, with the most productive player being Cameron Rupp.
Just six players on the current 25-man roster were drafted by the Phillies.
