Wheeler reported that at least two teams were poised to take Luchanko in the teens. So he probably wasn't getting past #15.
He's got more upside, but was more of a gamble, than Helenius - August birthday (so won't be 18 until next season), played on a really bad team with little forward talent. Helenius played in a man's league so it's easier to get a read.
Luchanko at 17 is 5'11 187, was a top performer at the comibne and voted the runner up in the OHL, in speed, smarts and work ethic. Three of the qualities Briere values.
The second round forward is a head scratcher, good at everything, excels at nothing, big, smooth but has a funky skating style. I guess they think they can fix his skating and turn him into a physical, two way middle six center.
The D-man they traded up for is another August birthday, big frame, 6'4 185, good skills but another who has to improve his skating, some of that will come when he fills out, some from coaching.
The Finnish center will be good depth.
