I'm not sure your first list supports your opinion (or caustic way of expressing it) exactly. I'd take all ten of the players ahead of Ovi on that list on my team. Maybe not Bossy, like you say longevity matters (and you yourself think highly of Kovalchuk). Saying that being the all-time leading goal scorer is not the same thing as being the best player isn't really controversial and if he's only the 8th or 11th or 20th best player, he's still a Hall of Famer.
It's also probably not fair to punish an individual player for not winning multiple Cups, but that is certainly the other reason he doesn't loom as large for hockey fans nationally. Along with not being Canadian, of course (which also isn't fair). Unlike Jagr (and Gretzky for that matter) he not only didn't play with any other superstars but most of his great teammates weren't North American. The fact that he is being celebrated as much as he is is actually a nice measure of progress from the age of Bobby Clarke and Don Cherry.
