Segura leads off with a single. Harper K's swinging and Hoskins hits a high fly to center. Very playable ball that either the CF or the LF could have handled. Realmuto called out on strikes.

Nick Pivetta pitching for the Phillies in the bottom of the sixth. Second pitch is sent into left center for a double.

Come backer to Pivetta, he goes to third, wide throw prevents an out. Ruled FC, no out, runners first and third.

Double play produces a run.

4-1.

Could have been out of the inning if Pivetta makes a basic play in the field.

He gives up a single and wild pitch before getting a ground out to end the inning.

Not a good start for Pivetta as a reliever.

New guy Mike Morin gives up a run on two hard hit doubles. He has a good change up, but I’m not sure it’s enough to keep hitters off balance. Not sure he’s going to last long with the Phillies.

First impression of Morin is not particularly good. In addition to the doubles, there were a couple fly balls hit pretty well.

Salas gets knocked around in the 8th but escapes with the bases left loaded and no runs scored. A real lackluster effort for the Phils tonight.

Musgrove was really on last night, but Phillies hitters helped him by chasing low sliders out of the zone.
Segura is not a disciplined hitter, and should be at the bottom of the batting order, not at the top.

One thing that has impressed me this season is Kingery learning to work a count, he's gotten much better at laying off pitches out of the zone, still gets fooled by breaking stuff, but is learning to spit on them. Still has a ways to go but the improvement is real.

Realmuto and Segura on the other hand are disappointments - it's almost as if Realmuto the hitter is oblivious to what he does as a catcher, chasing low outside sliders after he's set up by inside FBs. This team will be better when Bohm is ready and Realmuto gets pushed down the lineup as well.

I agree and was thinking the same. His long AB ended in a K, but he battled in a way that seemed totally unlike his ABs of last season. It was good to hear.

Both are playing offensively (and defensively?) at about their career averages, so if you're disappointed, IMHO maybe your expectations were too high unless you were thinking being surrounded by better players would get them to kick it up a notch. It's hard to defend a player after a golden sombrero night (Realmuto) but even Johnny Bench had bad days.

speaking of disappointments, as time goes on, i am glad that the phils didn't give one of those buy out years contracts to hoskins (or maybe they did and Boras said no). from looking at these game threads i'm seeing more and more strikeouts. probably the launch angle swing. just make contact. his stats are dropping pretty quickly. alot of K's. i'd drop him in the order, but who would hit 4th.

Rhys Hoskins? The team leader in HRs and OPS? OPS 60 points higher than Harper even after Harper's recent hot streak? 17th in the NL in OPS ahead of such names as Javy Baez (28 points higher), Ronald Acuna Jr (29 points higher) and Manny Machado (50 points higher), Top 10 in OBP, LEAGUE LEADER in pitches per plate appearance and walks per PA, 10th in Runs Created.

The only criticism of Hoskins might be taking too many walks. With Realmuto not hitting behind him he might need to be more aggressive early in the count. Notice Harper with runners on base has been more aggressive and getting good results. I might even experiment with flipping Hoskins and Segura in the lineup. If Hoskins is going to take all these walks, maybe putting a high average hitter behind both him and Harper is the right thing to do to kickstart the offense.

All these years of this board and people still can't see GM's tongue pressing against his cheek (or at least exaggerating).

That said, Hoskins is slumping a little (.644 in the second half with just 2 RBIs and 0 HRs in 9 games). And he has not come close to doing what he did in April (which was MVP/no-brainer all-star level). Since then he's consistently .860-/875 OPS, which is obviously still good.

Still ironic Carlos Santana is having exactly the same kind of season.

I once saw a study done of “would it be better to just walk Babe Ruth every time in 1927” done, the answer was no, and very clearly no.

There is no such thing as taking to many walks, it is a fallacy of the “old book” of strategy.

I guess if you had a truly terrible hitter behind you it might work out, but Realmuto is a league average hitter at the least. I think Hoskins approach is exactly what you want.
