Should Kapler Be Fired?

I normally would not fire a manager after just one season. I'm not a big fan of his style of managing, but I would normally allow him to see if he could make it work, ala Chip Kelly. I don't blame him for the Phillies not winning the NL East because the team was not good enough, but what is the worst offense, the Cardinal sin in baseball, that I can blame him for is that the team has obviously quit on him. Once that happens it is rare that he'd ever get respect back from the team. I am now in favor of firing him, curious if any others see this as I do.

Max Kepler at least plays pretty good defense. I would give him another year to see if the offense comes around.

Is there a chance that the front office is split at all? The moves to bring in the vets was very non-Klentak, very McPhail like. Is Andy McPhail essentially calling all the shots?

I voted to give him another year and see what happens. We have to remember how well they did for 2/3 of the season. I don't know if they have quit on him. Things went bad and they started losing due to multiple reasons that included starting pitchers being hit around, bullpen melt downs including a few blown leads in the 9th, games with out much hitting, and perhaps most concerning, terrible fielding and bone headed plays. Clearly, the team is down but I don't know that it is a matter of quitting .

I think there will be new optimism when they report for spring training. I remains to see how the 2019 season will play out.

No, he should not be fired. As LSP wrote above, it's a disappointing end to the season. However, it was exciting earlier on and more than a few people on various Phillies boards / sites were spruiking him as a contender for manager of the year! Contrary to the view that the sought after free agents would avoid playing under Gabe Kapler, I believe that such players would prefer to play for an organisation that is capable of maintaining its focus on long term goals and the chosen path (at least for some of the way).

Disappointment? Must be somebody's fault - somebody else's fault, not one's own unrealistic expectations.

Entirely normal; entirely predictable. Entirely depressing.

Frankly, I wish people didn't come down so hard on the team and club. It's not just on this board, either! I think that the final win-loss record will be more or less consistent with what was expected pre-season. If anything, 'people' anticipated improvement in the second half. Expectations were heightened after what was for me a tremendous first two-thirds of the season and, hence, 'disappointment'. However, what is playing out now is a gross over-reaction by the fans!

There's no question that a third-year manager of a club with playoff expectations (or previous playoff success) would get fired for something like this. Which still wouldn't necessarily be the right move, just ask the Nationals. It also would have been nice to at least stop the freefall, but with recent injuries to Quinn, Crawford, Franco and Williams plus no bounce-back from Hoskins or Herrera, just wasn't gonna happen.

It's a shame he won't get Manager of the Year but I guess Snitker gets it now.

I said "give him another year", but honestly I think that he will need to be fired after that. He just isnt ready to manage a ML Team, he has ideas but honestly he has as many bad ideas as good. Many of the things he has done do not work at all and I am reasonably sure he is going to stick with them. Batting Kingery in the middle of the order for a good part of the season when he obviously was not ready to hit ML pitching yet, his batting order was sometimes seemingly designed for failure, players had no idea what they were supposed to do in many situations, regression of virtually every player. He isnt in the right job, he needs to spend some time as a bench manager and learn how to do some of the managerial things he either doesnt understand or isnt willing to do (to be different).

Bad manager, but sadly I assume we are stuck with him for another season.

When this process started, he had a blank check to experiment and learn the job this year. I loved watching this team at mid-season and I won't forget that now that I can't even stomach to look at a box-score. The experiment is over. Gabe and Matt- you are on the clock now. My next concern is that, anecdotally speaking, roster overhauls and adding big free agents seem to end up in disappointment most of the time the following season too.

When I was a kid, even during their worst seasons I was sad to see the seasons end. It meant at least getting a chance to see some young kids, or some veteran pad some counting numbers. This year has been like watching a loved one die in a slow painful manner.
